During two cases at the Nikola Tesla airport and at the Gradina crossing, customs agents, in collaboration with the police, yesterday prevented an attempted smuggling of some 100,000 undeclared euros.
The violation at Belgrade airport was discovered on October 11, 2020, when a 56-year-old man arriving on a flight from Zurich was detained at a green checkpoint, intended for those who have nothing to report.
During the previous X-ray check of the arrived luggage, the aforementioned passenger, with dual Swiss-Serbian citizenship, was selected for a detailed examination. To the usual question from the customs officer, he replied that he only carries personal luggage, and when asked about the cash he carries with him, he said that it has between 50 and 100,000 euros.
In his hand luggage, more precisely in a laptop bag, exactly 100,000 euros were found in denominations of 200 euros each. When asked why he did not report such a large amount of foreign currency, he replied that he did not do that, because he saw that a tape was placed in the red control passage, so he thought the channel was closed.
After the return to the passenger of the allowed amount of 10,000 euros, 90,000 euros were kept with the registration of the offense committed until the end of the judicial procedure.
On the same day, an interesting foreign exchange smuggling attempt was discovered at the Gradina crossing. That is, the 56-year-old Turkish citizen hid 11,000 euros in a sock, which was found in a cloth belt around his waist.
Previously, he showed the customs official a wallet in which he actually had about 6,000 euros, as much as he reported during the exit control at this crossing.
