Arilje – Although it is not known as Tara and Uvac, the Panjica River, which runs through the towns near Arilje, is a true tourist pearl that was recognized by visitors only this year, when due to the coronavirus epidemic it registered a record attendance.

The deeply cut canyon is one of the most beautiful in this area and represents a true treasure of intact and preserved nature. A path of about 1,000 meters in length takes you through the Panjica course, and everyone who decides to walk it at the end will be rewarded, because there is a unique water cave.

“So far, the spaleologists have explored its first part, about 200 meters. Trained divers are waiting for more searches, because there is supposed to be a lake in the cave. This is an extremely attractive locality, and the path that leads to the Cave of the Water is a real adrenaline rush. “Wooden bridges have been made over the river, benches have been placed, but brave adventurers often run over Panjica, if the water level is not particularly high. However, we advise all visitors not to take a tour of the cave without the company of mountaineers or cavers, “Marija Aleksic told RINA of the Arilje Tourist Center.

According to its geological type, the Water Cave is of karst origin, and for now it is assumed that the body of water that comes out of the cave is actually a sinkhole formed by several springs that sink somewhere in the Kukutnica area.

Due to its position and appearance, it is one of the most important spaleological objects in the Arilje region, and its hydrogeological potential is also important.

“The cave is a source of groundwater of great abundance, and the rare limestone morphological phenomena that can be seen here make this a perfect place for ‘active tourism’. Immediately in front of the cave there is a fascinating waterfall made by the Panjica River, which is about eight meters high. in the summer months the amount of water is less, but in spring and autumn the image that is created here is really fantastic ”, said Marija Aleksic.

This area is rich in numerous endemic species, so in the Panjica canyon, Josif Pančić, during his travels through Serbia, found an extremely rare plant species “campanula secundiflora”, and it is assumed that there are no more than a hundred specimens in this locality.
