According to data from the Office of Statistics of the Republic (SORS), the female name Milica has been the most common for decades, while for men it is Dragan; However, that name has not been popular for a long time, but they are remnants of former glory.

That is, in the fifties and sixties of the last century, Dragan assumed the primacy of Slobodan, which marked the period from 1942 to 1947. The name Dragan was so popular that even today a significant number of men bear that name, although modern parents don’t choose it as often anymore.

The name Milica lost the popularity it gained before World War II in the second half of the 20th century. However, the 1990s brought with it a new and old trend, which is why Milica once again “dominated” birth registries, in which the female name is still entered more than all the others.

The popularity of the name Milica was briefly shaken only in 1997, when Jovana took over the pedestal, but the following year everything was back to normal.

Radmila, Ljubica, Vera, Olga, Desanka… are the names that marked the period between the two world wars, and with the emergence of the “second Yugoslavia” names like Slobodanka, Ljiljana, Snezana and Zorica became fashionable.

The end of the 20th century and the first year of the new millennium brought the popularization of female names such as Angel, Sara, Theodore, and Anastasia.

Nikola has been on the list of the most common male names since 1992, and before that he hadn’t been in the top ten for almost half a century. For that reason, Nikola occupies only the fifth place in the list of names that, according to the data of the last census, carries the male population in Serbia.

In the top 10 of male names, once very popular names like Zoran and Goran were left, and a spot on the list was reserved for three “pre-war” names: Milan, Aleksandar and Dušan.

On the other hand, fewer and fewer parents give their children the name Miodrag or Milorad, while names like Luka, Stefan and Lazar have experienced a true “boom” in the last quarter century.

When it comes to the most common surnames in Serbia, of course there were no deviations and quite unexpectedly they all end in -ić. Jovanovic is in first place, followed by Petrovic and Nikolic, and the top 5 are the last names Markovic and Djordjevic.
