The temple was ceremonially inaugurated as part of the celebration of the 1700th anniversary of the Edict of Milan, when the event was moved from Nis to Podgorica.
The event was attended by the Patriarch of Vaselje, Moscow, Serbia and the Patriarch of Jerusalem.
The temple was built on the initiative of Metropolitan Amfilohije and at that time it was the largest religious investment in Montenegro and beyond.

There is no precise data on how much its construction cost, but the Serbian Orthodox Church later confirmed that more than six million euros were invested in the construction.
