Today the public had the opportunity to see photos of Bishop Amfilohije when he was still Risto Radović, a 20-year-old seminary student, but no one has yet published photos of the Blessed Bishop as a child.

Amfilohije was born on Christmas Day 1938 as Risto Radović in Bare Radović, near the Morača monastery. He was the fifth of fifteen children.

He graduated from the Belgrade Faculty of Theology in 1962, studied at the Faculty of Philosophy at the same time, and continued his postgraduate studies in Bern and Rome, where he received his master’s degrees from the Pontifical Oriental Institute in 1965.

He became a monk in Greece in 1967 and in Athens he defended his doctorate at St. Gregory Palamas, after which he became a professor at the St. Sergius Orthodox Institute in Paris.

He became an assistant professor at the Belgrade Faculty of Theology in 1976 and later a full professor. He was dean for two terms.

He became Bishop of Banat in 1985, when he was enthroned in Vršac, and became Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral and Exarch of the Peć throne on Christmas Eve 1991.

In 1999, he stayed in Kosovo and Metohija, where he searched for the remains of slain Serbs and took care of the refugees.

Following the death of Patriarch Pavle, in 2009 he was elected guardian of the patriarchal throne. At the head of the liturgy and of the popular movement against the so-called The Law of Religious Freedom was enacted in 2019.
