Today, the Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates Mother’s Day and Mother’s Day. This holiday is celebrated two weeks before Christmas and is the most important Christian holiday for mothers and wives.
It is customary for mothers to tie their mothers early in the morning, before they wake up. According to tradition, mothers can only untie themselves when they give a gift to their children.
There is also a belief that husbands should tie up their newly married wife and therefore ask for offspring in the coming year. Furthermore, in some parts of Serbia, especially in present-day Herzegovina, there was a custom for only one married couple to make a vow between mother and father, confirming the marriage vow of the church.
It is also the custom of the Mothers that all women go to the liturgy in the church where the priest gives them communion and forgives them all the sins they have committed in the last year. According to a popular belief, we should never wear old clothes on Mother’s Day, but only new clothes, so that we can enter the New Year “clean”.
The uterus is a holiday when it is not necessary to clean the house, vacuum, clean the house. A more recent tradition dictates that men and fathers, together with their children, prepare a Sunday lunch for mothers and grandmothers who today need to rest, that is, for whom the only obligation is to provide a gift to the little ones.
During Lent, on Christmas Eve, incense should be burned in the house, prayed together with the family, and mothers send a special personal prayer to the Mother of God, thanking God for the health and prosperity of their children and of the whole family.
