While waiting for a bear at the control of Jadovnik Mountain, a wolf walked to the marked place without any plan.

Experts took advantage of this unusual arrival and tagged this animal for the first time in Serbia. It was called Vanda and it was a satellite electronic collar that came from Croatia.

“In the next year, we will monitor their movements, activities and I hope that in this way we will find a lot of information related to wolves in Serbia.” First of all, its habitat, what territories it prefers, if it gave birth and if it has cubs, if it is alone, it lives in pairs or in packs.

The plan was originally to monitor the bear, but we caught the wolf by accident, because it was not planned, the necklace for her came from Zagreb, which was loaned to us by colleagues. “After we tagged it, we let it go further into its natural habitat,” Dusko Cirovic, a professor at the Belgrade Faculty of Biology, told RINA.

The terrain on the mountain near Prijepolje was a complete success for the team of five members of the Faculty of Biology, because shortly after Wanda, a brown bear arrived, one of the largest specimens ever recorded in this part of Serbia. They also put him to sleep for a short time to be marked and received his necklace.

“We managed to capture an extremely large male, who weighs around 230 kilograms and is an individual over ten years old. We hope you will cooperate and cooperate with us, because such large specimens often know how to dispose of the collar because the neck circumference is larger than the head circumference. One of the objectives that we achieve through monotony is, without a doubt, to determine their habitat, movements and habits. Now, in addition to the brown bear, we will have the opportunity to follow the wolf, which is really cool, “said Ćirović.

The new bear was given the name Bora, and only one more was marked in this territory, called Miloš, and so far it has sent more than twenty thousand important data on its movements. On Jadovnik Mountain, there has been a feeding zone for several years, in which video surveillance has been installed, with the help of which the arrival of all wild animals is monitored.

“This year the food was good, so they found it mainly in the wild during the summer months. Here came three bears, Miloš, Bora and Mališa, whom we named after their small stature. Now we are preparing for the next period. Annually 30 to 50 tons of food are brought to the trough. We are also regular during the winter months, because if we do not get food, the animals would go hungry and would have to look for food elsewhere, which has not happened until now, because the beasts did not damage the surrounding rural houses. Although it was often thought that wolves slaughter sheep and bears knock down hives, it turned out to be wrong, because the most damage is caused by stray dogs, “said Vjekoslav Joksimović from the Citizens Association” Jadovnik: an oasis of untouched nature. “

The public company “Serbia Forests”, the Prijepolje public farm, manages three protected areas, including the Ozren and Jadovnik mountains, where brown bears are monitored.

“This monitoring has already yielded results, because now we know that Milos travels only about ten kilometers a day, and first looks for food in these mountains of ours. In addition to Jadovnik and Ozren, Griffon vultures are also monitored in Milesevka Canyon. So far, there have been four counts, the project is coming to an end and the results will be presented to us by experts who were in that task, “said Bojana Bjelic from PE” Serbia Forests “.
