Judging by the frequency of detection, but also by the total value of more than six million euros seized since the beginning of the year, which has long exceeded last year’s result, it is concluded that currency smuggling is constantly increasing.

Thus, during the last weekend at the Horgos crossing, customs agents, in collaboration with the police, thwarted two of these attempts and seized almost 100,000 euros. One of the violations was discovered on November 22, 2020, when a BMW X6 with German registration was selected for a detailed inspection at the entrance of the country.

The driver and co-pilot, both citizens of the Republic of Serbia, said they were carrying personal luggage and the allowed amount of foreign currency. It turned out that they were not telling the truth, because both were carrying much more than the prescribed 10,000 euros.

Novi Pazar’s 40-year-old driver’s bag contained 51,300 euros, while with his companion they found 51,785 euros. Once the allowed amount was returned to them, with the confirmation of the foreign exchange violation, a little more than 83,000 euros was withheld.

A similar case at this crossing occurred on November 20, 2020, when two Turkish nationals were thwarted in an attempt to illegally transfer money across the border. They traveled home in a German-registered Audi, saying during the meeting with customs officials that they had 10,000 euros in addition to their personal luggage.

Of course, that was only part of what they actually had, because during detailed examination, the reported quantity was first found in the driver’s bag. Then another 7,700 euros were found in his jacket, while 4,000 euros were hidden in the underwear he was wearing.

The co-pilot had 11,000 euros in his wallet and another 2,000 euros in his pants pocket. The allowed amount was returned to the passengers, and the competent court will decide on the remaining amount of a total of 34,600 euros found.
