They promised a job in Belgium, forcing the workers to steal

A five-member criminal group from the vicinity of Žablja, led by suspect MR (36), was arrested on suspicion of forcing Serbian citizens to steal copper in Belgium, the Interior Ministry announced.

According to the statement, the criminal group is suspected of misleading three Serbian citizens by promising them a lucrative job in Belgium.

– They said they would work in the city of Charleroi as painters for a good salary. However, when they arrived in this country from the EU, there was a commotion. The owners forced them to steal copper and other materials from the factory every day. They had to deliver the stolen goods to the bosses, and they sold it as waste, says the source and continues:

– In this way, the suspects earned from 1,000 to 1,500 euros a day. The money they earned was spent on real estate, cars, and other personal needs.

The police said they suspected that the organized criminal group was active from February until the second half of October 2019.

– During the search of the suspects’ apartments, the police found around 5,000 euros, two pistols with ammunition, a larger quantity of jewelry and several mobile phones – added the Interior Ministry.

MI (39), RM (34), VV (57) and IJ (40) were also handcuffed and all were detained for up to 48 hours on suspicion of having committed the crime of human trafficking.
