The Bar railway is one of the most important roads, it passes through extremely inaccessible areas, and in order for the railway transport from Belgrade to Vrbnica to be carried out safely, 11 mountaineers take care of it in the countryside every day.

These are the workers of the Slope Maintenance Section in the “Serbian Railway Infrastructure”. Their task is to remove stones and shrubs from the slopes that protrude from the railway, clean the slopes and thus prevent landslides.

In the past, this work was carried out by several hundred employed railway workers, and on the stretch from Zlatibor to Priboj alone, 175 workers maintained the railway. Now, only 11 of them have been hired, they were not educated for that, but they went through special alpine training and flawlessly perfected the trade they perform.

Miško Goločevac (55), head of the Slope Maintenance Section, also the oldest mountaineer among the railway workers, says that his team takes care of the railway safety along the entire stretch from Belgrade to the border of Montenegro in Vrbnica. It states that due to the configuration of the terrain and the large slopes, the most critical part of the railway is on the section from Zlatibor to Brodarevo.

– The Bar railway passes through extremely inaccessible areas and has many slopes. They are millions of square meters and everything that needs to be maintained for the traffic to work safely. Not all the slopes have been completed and repaired since the railway was put into operation, so there have often been landslides, of which there are still, but to a much lesser extent than before, says Goločevac.

Although he works on the railway, for Denis Husović, the mountaineering equipment is a daily uniform for performing work tasks. Often, removing crumbling rocks, he spends eight hours tied with a rope, with a bar in hand, hanging from slopes several tens of meters high.

– The work is extremely demanding, climbing numerous slopes, many times on warm days, we come across poisonous snakes, which are an additional danger for us – says Denis and adds that before joining the team, in addition to mountaineering, he had to complete the training for work at height.

Totally safe for traffic

The Belgrade – Bar railway was opened to traffic in 1976.

Currently, in Serbia, for the majority of passengers, the train is not the first-choice means of transport, and fewer and fewer loads are being transported by rail. Passengers often cite delays, too long travel times, and often poor infrastructure as reasons to avoid the train.

However, 11 railway climbers, who breathe as one, assure that the track is completely safe for traffic, because they care about the condition of the tracks and the occurrence of landslides.

The safety of the people you work with comes first for Zeljko Ljeljanic, the manager, who has been working on the railway for a full 23 years.

– There are always unforeseen situations. However, we do our best not to cause any problem or injury to workers while driving down the slope. The railway must also be secured so that the stones do not reach the rails, Zeljko emphasizes.
