We usually see the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić serious and strict in his public appearances. In the New Year’s conversation for Kurir, the head of state showed what is hidden behind that “facade”.
He has never spoken more openly about his three children: what kind of relationship he has with the eldest Danilo, why he is overly protective of his daughter Milica, and how he plays with the youngest Vukan. For the first time, he talked about growing up with his brother Andrej and why Vučić’s men never talk about emotional topics. He also revealed how you can surprise your associates, what relaxes you, and what decisions you made on the New Year. In the interview, Vučić also spoke about the war with the mafia, who had been eavesdropping on him for a year and a half, and what he was saying to the new government of Montenegro.

You have been advertising a confrontation with the mob for some time. Darko Elez, a large fish in the Balkan subsoil, fell. A man related to the most powerful clans that also operate in Serbia. Is this the beginning of that final fight?
Yes, I think it’s very important that the state finish it. The state is the only one that has a monopoly on physical force, it must show seriousness and determination in the fight against organized crime, the fight against corruption and what is important, that there is no situation in the city where everyone talks about know who is going to blackmail and sell. drugs without anything happening. If everyone knows and everyone is silent and no one is doing anything, then the problem is with the state. And I think the results that have been achieved in previous years, and I am particularly pleased that since the murders in Usce and Belleville, or it is known who killed them, they have all been arrested or prosecuted. It is important that the prosecution and police do their job and know that the state will come to the end, regardless of someone’s name and how dangerous these people are.
And the names are big …
In our country we had the problem of having a few missing young people, mostly from the criminal world, but that does not mean that you have the right to kill those people because you belong to another criminal clan. So some people think that if there is no body, there are no facts, and that they have protected themselves with that. I think they were wrong and that we will soon show how much they were wrong, thinking that that way they can deceive the state, that they can play with everything and that they can kill as they please.
They obviously think that because they have a solid background in the country … Who are the people behind the strongest members of the clans?
When you talk about the mafia, what is the definition of the mafia is that you always have a backing and certain structures within the state agencies that support you, and that is the essence, that’s why it is very difficult. It is not a tough fight because they have muscles or better weapons, it is funny, the story of a boy. Of course, it’s always dangerous when they have the protection of certain circles within the state system, and I think that not only did it seriously shake them up, but I think they are in big trouble. I spoke with the police and I see that their confidence in the decisions of the state in relation to the state has returned.
How did it happen that they got so strong and practically got out of control?
I took more care of all the other problems and again I can rightly take some kind of blame. I took care of Kosovo and Metohija, the situation in the region, the economy, the crown and vaccines, and everything possible … When you are fully focused on all that, you cannot send the best messages from all areas. When you don’t say anything about it for three, four or five months, then some may say, “Yeah, there is a state behind us! You see this guy upstairs, he’s not doing anything.” So, I’m sorry I didn’t say anything about it for months, but now I see that everyone has understood their tasks and got to work.
Which clans and which individuals in that war may pose the greatest danger?
The state is at war with them regardless of which clan they belong to (kavački, škaljarski or anyone else). They are killing each other, they are two Montenegrin clans, who found their exponents in Belgrade, both because of the big money and because of the division of the drug market. I believe that we have managed to do something with various measures in the past, and I believe that we will completely clean that criminal scum from the streets of Belgrade and Serbia. And where one comes from does not mean that he does not belong to one or that he is not close to any of these clans. And it is precisely this power of some of these people that has to do with the fact that some of them have been coming together lately, although they were not so close, and that is why it is very important that such actions take place now.
For some time now, there has been an unofficial story from the security structures that you were heard as President of the Republic, some of your closest associates, and even members of your family. Do you have such knowledge?
Well, there were some strange things, but I think the competent authorities will also say what they think on that subject. There were strange things that should not happen. As for immoral things, so are illegal things. I have proof that I was intervened. I have my own recorded conversations, because some people thought they could delete them, hide them. But don’t forget that when you have this kind of support from people, there are a lot of people who want to do their job honestly and professionally and will not agree with such things. So I believe that the competent authorities will investigate that and that if there was an unequivocal violation of the law, those who violated the law will be held responsible.
Do you know who listened to you secretly or under whose orders?
I don’t know directly the names of the people who listened to me. But yeah, I think I know who’s behind it. I’m not one of those people who will be passionate about revenge, I understand what everything looks like and everything is clear to me. It is nothing special to me.
How long has it been since you assumed the presidency?
It lasts a long time, a year and a half.
