Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi told parliament today that the defense agreement reached with the United States was “the result of lengthy negotiations.”
“The agreement has 19 articles and an annex that contains the legal status of the US and civilian forces employed in the US Defense Ministry and regulates the relations between the Jordanian and US armed forces,” Safadi said.
The agreement, which was not presented to parliament for adoption, was signed on January 31, approved by the government on February 17, and the royal decree on it was published in the Official Gazette on March 16.
“The goal of the agreement is to provide a framework for defense cooperation and to strengthen US support for Jordan’s defense and security programs …,” Safadi said.
The head of Jordanian diplomacy added that the United States helps Jordan with $ 425 million a year.
Under the new agreement, US forces will have freedom of movement throughout Jordan. Safadi said the document is in line with Jordanian and international law.
