Western countries are preparing to celebrate Halloween tonight. The pumpkins have largely been dug up already, the masks have been made, and the treats are ready. It is the night before the Day of the Dead, November 1, which is marked in most of the Christian world as an important day when families visit the cemeteries of their loved ones.
However, today is also a great holiday for Serbs. It may not be as well known and certainly not as commercialized, but it is the baptismal feast of many hosts from Subotica to Pristina.
It is believed that Saint Luke personally knew the Mother of God and that the three icons with her image that the saint painted are the closest to her true appearance. For this reason, he is considered the founder of Christian iconography. His relics are kept in Constantinople.
The holiday is popularly known as Lucindan and is a frequent celebration of Serbian Orthodox families. Saint Luke is the protector of the medical profession and of many hospitals.
In Serbia these days, pens are cordoned off so that wolves don’t give up cattle. There is a famous saying: “Luka is coming, there is a wolf.” On the other hand, winter is also here, knocking at the door. It is said: “San Lucas, snow on the hip”. That is why it is worth preparing as soon as possible.
Letter from a Belgrade mother
On the social networks of Serbia last year, on the eve of Lucindan, a letter appeared from the mother of DM from Belgrade, who went to a primary school on the occasion of the celebration of the so-called All Hallows’ Eve.
“Dear, on the occasion of your suggestion that children 31.10. Bring props to school to celebrate the American satanic holiday” Halloween “, which has a direct connection with unclean forces and dead people, I hereby inform you that as a parent I do not I allow my son to be an accomplice in the desecration of Orthodoxy and Saint Luke, days celebrated as baptismal glory.
This is not the United States, this is Serbia. My son is not allowed to put on makeup or dress in a witch costume without my permission, not even in a joke or in a game that, I repeat, is spiritually dangerous for the souls of children and for all of us. If you punish my son for disapproving of the celebration of witches, Satan, I will turn to the higher authorities and the Protector of citizens.
Sincerely, mother of DM Belgrade. +++ “
This letter caused a lot of attention on the networks, although many at the time commented that it was written only on Facebook and that it was never sent to any school. True or not, but it raised a lot of questions and sparked heated debate …
