Just before this holiday, the retirees will receive a gift or a one-time aid of 5,000 dinars, announced the day before yesterday, not to Santa Claus, but to the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić.

Thus, according to him, about 1.72 million pensioners will receive 5,000 dinars each on December 17 or 18, and that will cost the treasury about 75 million euros.

“I know it doesn’t mean a lot to those with a pension of 78, 80 or 90,000 dinars, but it does for a lot of those with a below-average pension, which will be 29,500 dinars with this.” It will mean a lot to agricultural retirees, especially the around 750,000 of them who receive less than 25,000 dinars. I’m happy that we managed to find this money, “said Vučić as a guest on RTS.

Retiree assistance was also part of the first package from April, when a one-time payment of 4,000 dinars was paid, totaling just over € 60 million.

However, it is interesting how the State “found” 75 million euros, and just a week ago, the president appealed to the Crisis Staff to take care of the economy when determining epidemiological measures, so as not to compromise the payment of salaries and pensions and their increase of 1 January.

The question is if there was money, why did they wait with epidemiological measures so long that the number of crowns infected with the virus soared and the health system was on the verge of exploding.

Some experts see more political than economic motives in this measure.

Economist Goran Radosavljevic points out that a controlled policy of aid to the economy has been in place from the beginning, where sectoral aid is deliberately ignored.

There is a payment of 100 euros to each adult citizen, it helps pensioners twice. And according to statistics, pensioners are the least threatened part of the population. If only they had helped the poorest pensioners or poor households. I think the measures are aimed at the target group of voters in the ruling party, ”concludes Radosavljević, adding that the state had to start targeting those most affected by the pandemic a long time ago.

He also asks why everyone was paid the minimum wage when not all sectors of the economy are affected equally, in addition, some, such as pharmacy, are doing better in times of crisis.

Mihailo Gajić, from Lübeck, recalls that there are 200,000 elderly people in Serbia who do not receive a pension and are not covered by this aid.

“From an economic point of view, it is obvious that they kept money for this payment. This aid does not have much economic logic. It is true that pensioners will spend those 5,000 dinars, demand will increase, but it is known that the multiplier of state spending is relatively low. “Many things are imported, including non-durable consumer goods, so this measure can leave us with higher public debt and help the German economy,” Gajic says.

On the social side, the question arises as to why everyone is being helped, when there are retirees with high pensions for whom this help does not mean God knows what.

“With so many elderly people who do not have any pension, this is an unfair measure,” believes Gajic.

He explains the practice since the beginning of the crisis of taking action against everyone by saying that the state wanted to prevent one group from attacking other groups to ask for money.

“The problem is that then you give to those who are not in crisis, as well as those who are failing. If we can say that there was no time for the analyzes of the first package, there was time for the second package of August to identify the most threatened. That is why our aid packages are the most extensive with minor effects ”, he concludes.

Krkobabic welcomes the granting of aid

Belgrade – On Friday, the president of the PUPS, Milan Krkobabić, welcomed the decision to grant pensioners a one-time aid of 5,000 dinars each, estimating that “the initiative of President Aleksandar Vučić is valid and more than appropriate in time that we live”.

“I ordered all groups of councilors and councilors in Belgrade and in all other cities and local governments where the PUPS participates in local assemblies, to launch an initiative to pay a one-time financial aid to pensioners who receive less than the national average of 27,764 dinars “. In this way, the aid of 5,000 dinars that all pensioners will receive, and that additional help from local self-governments, will be a true expression of our solidarity with those who need it most, ”said Krkobabic.
