Most of the time, young people bring the virus and then everyone in the house gets sick. The elderly often have a severe clinical picture and some even die.
How many patients do you have? What is the age structure?
– At KBC “Bežanijska kosa” we have about 300 patients, our capacities are 95 percent full. And up to 12 percent of the total number of patients are in intensive care. Every eighth patient is in intensive care and there are 11 of them on ventilators. The workforce remains in the hospital, while there are significantly younger people in the admission and triage clinic. They generally tolerate the disease well and can be treated at home with controls. However, those older than 40 years, due to the severity of the clinical picture, require hospital treatment.
Does that mean that all people over 40 stay in the hospital?
– Patients with bilateral pneumonia remain in the hospital and are usually 45 years or older. Younger people in kovid generally suffer from thromboembolism, which is caused by a blood clot in the lungs. They are stabilized respiratory, but they are the ones that suffer most from these thromboembolisms. We almost had one patient who was out of breath, but when he tried to get up, he lost consciousness, fell and died on the spot.
Isn’t that your only case?
– Unfortunately, it isn’t. Although we give anticoagulant therapy, which is against the formation of blood clots, and with which the patient must be completely protected, in some people, unfortunately, this virus acts much stronger than drugs and generates blood clots. On the other hand, we cannot administer higher doses of anticoagulant therapy because internal bleeding would occur that would endanger the patient. It is obvious that there are some people in whom this covid causes extremely strong thrombus formation.
And that has not been seen so far with viral infections?
– Yes, never seen before. There is no virus that creates blood clots as much as corona.
However, with the crown, women do better. Why?
– Women have a significant advantage over men in the crown. It is believed to have something to do with estrogen. And these are women up to 60 years old. Until they enter menopause, they have fewer complications. Up to 80 percent of ventilator patients are men, and 20 percent of women receiving mechanical ventilation are older than 65 or had very serious illnesses before the crown. Mortality from kovid is also lower in women. All of this is believed to be due to the functioning of the ovaries, which still secrete estrogens.
Other than back pain, what unusual corona symptoms have you noticed?
– People often do not associate back pain with the crown, and it turned out that this is one of the symptoms. And we also noticed a rash, which occurs exclusively on the face. It is characteristic, like an allergy on the face. There is also conjunctivitis. And for some, the kovid begins with nausea and diarrhea.
You have had a crown twice
– I was among the first to receive the crown because I was constantly with the patients. And the second time I got sick because I wasn’t wearing those double masks in contact with proven positive patients. I thought I had immunity because I had antibodies. However, this is proof that antibodies do not provide 100% protection under conditions of high virus concentration. I went into the rooms where there were five or six patients.
