Customs officials get in the way of so-called “ant smuggling” every day, that is, passengers smuggling small amounts of goods in their personal luggage, most of the time cigarettes.

They are usually the ones who try to smuggle them into Western European countries, where their price is significantly higher than in the Balkan region.

Thus, on October 17, 2020, at the Gradina junction, in cooperation with the police, an attempted smuggling of 3,000 different cigarettes was prevented.

The offense was discovered when a passenger van with Bulgarian license plates with three passengers arrived for control at the entrance to the country.

When asked if they had anything to report, the three Bulgarian citizens said that in addition to their personal luggage, they also have two cases of cigarettes, which is more than the number of 50 cigarettes that can be brought into Serbia without registering.

It was soon determined that that was not all. A detailed check found nine boxes in the bags near the front seats, and then twelve more boxes of cigarettes in one of the trunk bags.
