This is the opinion of Dragomir Anelković, a political analyst, on the position of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, that the conflict in Kosovo of 20 years was wrong, expressed by Riard Grenel, the mediator in the negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina writes Sputnik.
Grenel, at the same time, did not specify what and when Trump meant when he said this.
Anelković believes that Trump clearly, in this way, condemned the US policy on this issue, which was followed in the previous period.
“Of course, Washington cannot make a sudden turn to what the then US administration did, but Trump is aware that these are bad frameworks and that something needs to be changed. I think his statement is very favorable for us, because it means, at the less rhetorically, that is what the United States did to Serbia regarding Kosovo, “Anelković is convinced.
The Sputnik interlocutor adds that this does not mean that the United States will stop recognizing Kosovo, because it will never create a discontinuity in relation to its policy, even when it is radically different in relation to the previous administration.
“So they will not overturn the policy of their predecessors, but we can expect greater understanding from Serbia and the willingness to compromise at some point. But we cannot expect radical moves such as moving away from the concept of ‘independent’.” Kosovo ‘!, Anelković is convinced.
He believes that Trump, when he spoke about the wrongly led conflict, was probably referring to the aggression against the FRY that took place 20 years ago.
“It is clear that the biggest mistake of the United States is certainly that it carried out an aggression against a sovereign state, to occupy a part of its territory. And then it allowed the Islamic fundamentalists to do whatever they wanted. The fundamentalists themselves later became a danger for the United States, because “The largest number of members of the extreme Muslim formations in the Middle East, relative to the number of inhabitants, came from Kosovo. This is their first mistake, “Sputnik said.
Another mistake relates to the behavior of the United States after taking control of Kosovo, because it did nothing to establish a legal framework.
“That is, they let that area become mafia territory, and finally, they recognized it as a state. Instead of agreeing before recognition on a model that would satisfy the Serbs, the division of Kosovo or something else … to the Albanians they wanted, and now it is difficult for anyone to persuade them to commit, ”says Anelković.
