The public is not sufficiently aware of the challenges and risks that customs officials face in their work, because the media generally only talk about the results achieved in the fight against the various types of smuggling.

Thus, on December 20, 2020, during the in-depth check not far from the Kelebija crossing, more than 80,000 euros were discovered, which was preceded, if not too much, by a real drama.

That is, around 11:00 am, according to mutual reports from two drivers for smuggling drugs in trucks, the customs officers, together with colleagues from the border police, set out to conduct a detailed examination of them.

When they reached one of the trucks, with national registration, which was in the exit column formed towards the Kelebija junction, the 42-year-old driver from Vrnjacka Banja told them that the truck was empty and that he was going to load goods to Poland.

After a detailed inspection of the cargo area, which was actually empty, customs officials asked the driver to open the cabin so that it could also be inspected.

The driver did that, got in, pulled the top of his tracksuit from under the mattress of the bed, jumping out of the cab and running.

It was overcome very quickly, after which it turned out that the reason for such a reaction was that there were four envelopes with a total of 81,000 euros in the pockets of the aforementioned tracksuit.

As he did not have documentation on the origin of the cash that he hid under the mattress, he was returned the allowed amount of 10,000 euros, while the competent court in matters of misdemeanors will decide on the rest of the money.
