Rescuers pulled a child, crying and covered in dust, from the wrecked car in Petrinja. An unknown woman comforts him as they try to reach his father. Fortunately everything ends well. A father with a child in his arms on a stretcher is taken to the hospital. They are in visible shock, but are alive and, at first glance, not seriously injured.
These shots were recorded during a live broadcast after the devastating earthquake that struck central Croatia on Tuesday. The scene soon traveled the world and became one of the symbols of the catastrophe that claimed seven lives and left many people homeless.
Everyone who has been worried about the future fate of father and son for the past two days can rest assured. They are both doing well and on the mend: Father Josip Hodak from injuries and four-year-old Leon from shock. The boy’s mother, Maja Spoja, shared that on Facebook.
– Dear all, thanks for the messages and attention, we are as good as we can be. My brave boys are stable, out of danger. Leon passed away with minor bodily injuries, no fractures or bruises, Joseph is in the hospital under observation, he is stable, his ribs are broken, but thank God there is no organ damage. I hope you are all well physically, because mentally no one can be well. I hope this is the last bad. It never happened again. Take care of yourself, take care of yourself and your loved ones – he said.
Josip is currently at KBC Rebro, where he is treating his eight broken ribs, and the boy is with his mother with relatives in Zagreb.
“He was mad”
Maja spoke for “Jutarnji list” about the most difficult moments of her life. That Tuesday at 12:19 pm she was home, and her husband and son had gone to town about ten minutes earlier.
– I got caught in an earthquake in our house where you can no longer live. I was out of my mind, how could I not? As soon as I recovered, I called Joseph. He did not answer. I called his parents, they said they weren’t with them. He knew they were somewhere in the city. Information came in that the downtown buildings had collapsed, injured and trapped in the ruins. People cried, sobbed, and I didn’t know anything about mine, because I couldn’t get Josip at all – Maja says.
She feared the worst, although she did not even know what kind of drama was happening in the center of the city with her loved ones, that the firefighters were trying to cut the sheet metal of the wrecked vehicle at that time, to get her husband out. The citizens took the boy out and an unknown woman comforted him until they took out his father.
It was only from the Sisak hospital that he received the information that Josip was fine, his mother was the first to arrive, because she lives nearby. So Josip called from someone else’s phone, just to tell him they were alive, and only at seven at night did they say more than a few words.
They separated him from the boy. Josip ended up on Rebra and she ended up with the boy for the checks. After the exam, he stayed in Zagreb with relatives.
– Leon hurt his leg a bit, but he’s already jumping around the house. What happened left no trace on him. She is happy, she asks when Dad will come and when will we go home to Petrinja – says Mom Maja.
His part of the city was completely destroyed and the roads were also damaged, so he does not know when they will be able to return home, but it certainly will not be before Josip is released from the hospital.
Tragically, the building that collapsed on her husband and son was supposed to be her new home. He grew up there with his parents, but due to the poor condition of the building they moved, but Josip and Maja planned to renovate it.
