“The crisis personnel have already done everything that is important, and the need for a part of the personnel will be felt for at least another half year. We will have weapons, that is, a vaccine, and it should be used as soon as possible,” said the Epidemiologist Predrag Kon, a member of the crisis staff, to RTS.
The speed of vaccine organization directly affects the course of the pandemic, Kon told the morning show. He cited the example of Israel, which vaccinated more than a million people in 10 days, while vaccination is much slower in the United States.
– After the first two waves, we have measured that 27.5 percent of people were in contact with the virus, and with the third round, that’s around 35-40 percent. It is necessary that 60 percent of the people are immune, and for that, about a million and a half citizens of Serbia must be vaccinated. That now depends exclusively on us – said Kon.
The epidemiologist says that we must hope that the situation improves day by day, but also that we will feel the consequences of larger meetings and walks, especially in Belgrade, after Christmas.
For the New Year, Kon wished the citizens that the Crisis Staff would be abolished as soon as possible, that is. to stop the need and the answer we all want to hear is how long we will wear masks.
– It depends mainly on immunity. At 60 percent, the virus can still circulate, but it will certainly be less than now. For the virus to stop circulating in the population, it is necessary to have more than 80 percent immunity, and for that, around 3.5 million people should be vaccinated in our country – explains Kon.
Doubting about vaccination is the worst thing that can happen to us, Kon believes.
– It should be clear that all vaccines are safe and everything else is a matter of affinity for one of the vaccines – Kon said.
The epidemiologist says that one must understand that it is necessary to carry out vaccination because waiting slows the strongest preventive measure.
– We should present our optimism now. No waiting, the state has done its best so far, the vaccine cannot resist but must be used immediately. We have priority and there are no more doubts – concluded Kon.
