The new wave of the epidemic, mainly due to the cancellation of the celebrations, has caused the turnover of meat in Serbia to fall by between 15 and 25 percent, and small producers and the meat industry also record losses. Low prices for live cattle don’t help, nor do special meat sales in stores.
The current price of lambs, whose supply is scarce, ranges between 220 and 230 dinars per kilogram of live weight, the price of piglets remained at a multi-monthly level of 200 dinars, while, according to data from the livestock markets, the Fattening cattle sells poorly at a price of 1.8 euros per kilogram of live weight.
– The producer was not found anywhere in those prices, be it lambs, piglets or calves, they are all lost. See how much you only need to invest in the production of fattening pigs. One kilogram of the cheapest concentrate equals 38 dinars, and one kilogram of growth of a fattening requires three kilograms, which is 105-118 dinars. Here we must add the work of the producers, transport, electricity … It is also difficult to sell, and although the celebrations have started, I have not sold any pig, because now everyone celebrates in the family circle – complains Branko Đuričić, a pig farmer from the Valjevo area.
Although the increase in the price of meat this year was not due to the price of live cattle in the market, butchers and markets say that the turnover is significantly lower than in the same period last year. Apart from farmers and traders, the large meat industry is also recording losses due to the epidemic.
– The drop in billing is between 15 and 25 percent, which is a drastic figure, and the business has been suffering since the beginning of the epidemic, because hotels, restaurants, bedrooms stopped working at first … At this time, lowering the prices of our products does not help. which are already 10 percent lower than last year right now. There are also special discounts of 15 percent, but to no avail. The epidemic has affected everyone in a chain, the purchasing power of consumers has fallen and the fear of people who keep the money for the “black days” is evident, fearing that the crisis will last. There are simply no other market disruptions causing all of this except the crown, they say in a well-known meat industry.
They also have less work in the toasters, except for those that are also larger catering facilities in the resorts or are “famous” for their quality. Others, however, point out that no one buys whole lambs and pigs anymore, and Miloš Đurić from Sabac’s “Đurić” steakhouse claims that the purchase was reduced to a few kilograms of meat “just for people to celebrate celebrations or birthdays in the family circle “.
Livestock doctor Radosav Vujić from the Agricultural Expert and Advisory Service agrees that the price of livestock and meat sales is affected by the outbreak of an epidemic that has reduced the number of celebrations and tourists, but also warns that the current crisis It could have far-reaching consequences for this branch of agriculture.
– Producers’ profits this year are certainly lower by 30 percent. This is not small when you look at the number of lambs, piglets, or beef cattle that are produced. It is not the same when a producer sells lambs for 300 or 200 dinars. If you have 30 lambs and you earn 3,000 dinars per lamb, that’s a good salary. I think prices will certainly not increase until the end of the year and unfortunately only a drop can be expected – says Dr. Vujić.
Lower price and lower turnover
The chain reaction of lower prices and lower turnover, as Dr. Radosav Vujić warns, may be a reduction in livestock in the field of sheep and cattle farming.
– If this trend continues with the current problems, next year there may be very negative and far-reaching consequences, which will lead to a decrease in the number of cattle in Serbia – says our interlocutor.
