After the death of Patriarch Irinej, Metropolitan Chrysostom of Dabro-Bosnia was appointed guardian of the patriarchal throne yesterday, while Bishop Jovan of Šumadija was appointed administrator of the vacant archbishopric of Belgrade and Karlovac.
Apparently, the assembly, in which the new patriarch will be elected, will still be held within the planned framework, in May next year, Kurir has learned.
Everything is set
Yesterday during the day, it was announced on the SOC website that the decision was made for the Holy Synod of Bishops to assume patriarchal duties (in accordance with Article 62 of the SOC Constitution), and that the Holy Synod would be presided over by Metropolitan Chrysostom of Dabro-Bosnia until the election of a new patriarch. Otherwise, as a general rule, the Synod is chaired by the oldest member.
– The Holy Synod of Bishops elected His Eminence the Bishop of Šumadija as administrator of the vacant archdiocese of Belgrade and Karlovac. Jovana (according to Article 70 of the Constitution of the Serbian Orthodox Church) – indicated on the Church website.
Bishop Ignjatije, Bishop of Požarevac-Braničevo, explained to Kurir that the Serbian Orthodox Church is so organized that it continues to function normally even after such a tragic event, which is not the case in the Catholic Church.
– Until Parliament, the duty of guardian of the patriarchal throne is carried out by the oldest member of the Synod, in this case it is Metropolitan Chrysostom of Sarajevo. The very organization of the Orthodox Church does not allow the death of its head to be a tragic event for the Church, because our Orthodox Church is divided into dioceses and each diocese is full of churches and works and lives quite normally. The patriarch is only the first among the bishops. In Catholicism, the death of the Pope beheads the entire church. That is not the case with us – said Bishop Ignatije.
Boss election
Despite speculation that the patriarch’s repose could move Parliament, scheduled for May 2021, because a new head of the Serbian Orthodox Church will now be elected, it most likely will not happen and will take place within the framework provided.
The Constitution of the Serbian Orthodox Church stipulates that anyone who has been a diocesan bishop for at least five years can be a patriarch, and the procedure requires that all three candidates be chosen by secret ballot by the Holy Synod of Bishops. When the names of those who received more than half of the votes are known, the election is by lottery, that is, in an “apostolic” manner. Three names are placed on separate envelopes, and those of the gospel.
Then, the members of the Assembly move from the assembly hall to the patriarchal chapel of Saint Simeon the bearer of myrrh, in the service of “calling the Holy Spirit for the election of a new patriarch”, which is attended by the bishop of older age by ordination. During that service, three names are placed on separate envelopes and those of the gospel. In a specific part of the service, one of the monks, chosen by the Council, takes out an envelope with the name of the new patriarch.
