“The work of the Russian sculptor and academic Alexander Rukavishnikov will soon be completely finished. Citizens can already get the impression of how well this monument will fit into the atmosphere of the new Sava Square,” Deputy Mayor Goran Vesić wrote on his Facebook profile.
As he said, in addition to the high artistic value, this monument also has enormous historical and cultural significance for the Serbian people.
“Stefan Nemanja is the founder of the Serbian state and later the Serbian empire. We want to show the whole world that the continuity of Serbian statehood lasts and survives for more than 800 years. That is a historical fact of which we should be proud as nation”.
As mentioned above, the monument will be five meters below the ground and 23 meters above the ground. The monument is located on a broken Byzantine helmet, within which there will be reliefs representing parts of the life of Stefan Nemanja.
Vesić previously announced that there would be about 50 people in the helmet and that it would be a kind of open-air museum, while there would be a fountain with 46 nozzles and special lighting around the monument.
