The third wave is so strong and we have a large number of patients, so without the capacity of the Batajnica hospital, it would be difficult for us to have a quality place to accommodate patients, he says in an interview for “Blic” prof. Dr. Nebojsa Ladjevic, Director of the Center for Anesthesiology and Resuscitation of the Serbian Clinical Center.

Someone who wears a respirator means they were in a critical health condition before then, because their last chance to survive is mechanical ventilation. As a result, the chances of survival are reduced, believes Dr. Ladjevic.

What is the situation in the newly opened covid hospital in Batajnica, how many patients do you have, what is your clinical picture?

– The clinical picture is different, but most patients are admitted with moderate and severe clinical picture. This hospital facility filled up very quickly, where we already have 390 patients in semi-intensive care and 68 on different types of mechanical ventilation in intensive care.

How much does it mean to open such a facility in the middle of the fight against the virus?

– Considering that this third wave is so strong, with many patients, without the capacity of this hospital, it would be difficult for us to have a quality place to welcome patients. The real and visionary decision was to build this hospital, but also the Krusevac hospital.

What is the age structure of the patients housed in Batajnica?

– The largest number of patients is middle-aged and elderly, but as you can see, there are also young patients. Fortunately, with our help, most patients seek healing, but it is long-lasting and exhausting.

Everything works in the hospital, is there any difficulty?

– So far, everything is working. There are those initial problems of organization and knowing the space. Everything is like when you move into a new house or apartment and guests come to you immediately. This time, due to the large number of patients after moving, we did not have time to slowly unpack and get used to the space, but we did it on the fly, immediately welcoming those who no longer had another place to be admitted and treated. We are happy to have been able to help you.

You have been involved in the fight against the crown from the beginning, is this third wave different from the first?

– My role is excellent in the proper involvement and deployment of anesthesiologists who are key to working in intensive care units with the most difficult patients. The proper use of human resources is very important. The third wave is the most difficult because there are many positive health workers, we are already tired because all this has been going on for a long time, and now we have the highest number of infected and hospitalized. Hope is given by all those who do not give up their work and who continue to do their shift in the middle of the day and in the middle of the night. Thanks to everyone who works in the Serbian health system, from kovid ambulance to intensive care.

How does our health system behave, how do we deal with pressure?

– It is surprising how flexible and easily adaptable our healthcare system has proven to be. The directors of the institutions are very capable both as doctors and now as hospital directors who manage to change the purpose of the hospital in 24 hours, organize work teams, green and red areas, acquire medicines and oxygen. The employees follow them in that, and the Ministry of Health gives them unreserved support.

When someone ends up on a respirator, what is their chance of survival? What are your observations during all these months of struggle?

– Someone who wears a respirator means that they were in critical health before that, because their last chance to survive is the application of mechanical ventilation. As a result, the chances of survival are reduced. In this disease, in the most pronounced forms, the chances of survival in mechanically ventilated patients range from 30 to 40 percent.

The virus showed us that there are no protected people, what is your advice, how should we behave?

– What is it that we must never forget? I’ve been repeating for seven months that the mask is our vaccine, and that has proven to be true 100 times so far. Wear a mask correctly, whenever you are in the company of someone. Take care of yourself and others.

When we return to normal life, does that moment come with the vaccine?

– I hope it comes. It takes time from vaccination to antibody creation, but the vaccine must first be approved. I believe in our Agency for Medicines and Health Products and in what they will decide.
