Customs dog Nero’s unmistakable sense of smell and mobile scanner enabled customs officers to discover more than 2,500 packets of cigarettes hidden in the roof of a pickup truck on December 23, 2020, at the Kelebija junction, in cooperation with police.
The violation was discovered when a “Mercedes” van with Belgrade plates arrived at the exit of the country around 7 pm, with a trailer for the transport of cars.
When asked if there was anything that should be reported to customs control, the 30-year-old driver from Obrenovac responded in the negative, saying that he was heading to Austria to buy a car that he intended to buy there.
However, it was singled out for detailed examination, when for the first time the official customs dog Nero, who was involved in everything, reacted to certain parts of the vehicle. A check with a mobile scanner followed, after which there was no longer any doubt that Nero was right, as the analysis of the image confirmed that the roof of the van was “upholstered” with some content.
Removing the headliner revealed densely stacked cigarette packs along the entire roof of the truck. After everything was taken away, it was determined that they were marked with excise stamps from North Macedonia and that they were a total of 50,200 cigarettes.
The driver, along with the van and the smuggled cigarettes, was seized by the police and the prosecution.
