The landing of the first automatic station in the history of modern Russia on the moon is scheduled for mid-October 2021, the Russian state space agency Roskosmos announced.
– Depending on the launch date, we will choose one of the two flight options: for 4.5 or 5.5 days. Preparatory operations in the moon’s orbit are supposed to take around five days. So the flight to the moon will take ten days, according to the Roskosmosa website.
The last Soviet interplanetary automatic station was Moon 24, launched in 1976. This will be the first time that modern Russia is sending spacecraft to the moon.
Luna 25 is planned to land near the south pole of Earth’s satellite. After landing on the moon, the Luna 25 station will conduct scientific research on the properties and composition of the polar soil and explore the moon’s polar exosphere. Spaceships have not landed in the polar region of the moon before. All Soviet and American missions, as well as planes from other countries, landed at moderate latitudes or at the equator.
