The European Union (EU) plans to start applying digital travel certificates from June, and the possibility is open for third-country nationals, including the Western Balkans, to receive this document when they travel.

However, European Commission (EC) spokesman Christian Wiegand emphasized that non-essential travel by third-country nationals to the EU is still prohibited, reports Radio Free Europe.

“Those who can travel at the moment can also obtain a green digital certificate by requesting it from the member country to which they travel, presenting proof of vaccination. “Member states must evaluate the evidence and issue a digital certificate,” Wiegand said.

Digital certificates introduced by the EU will contain information on vaccination, a negative PCR test or the presence of antibodies.

However, the European Commission states that there will soon be an option for third-country nationals to be recognized with vaccination certificates issued by their country, but that this requires harmonizing the system for issuing these documents with European requirements.

“This will practically recognize third country certificates in the EU in the same way as digital green certificates issued by the EU,” Wiegand said.

He explained that to avoid travel restrictions, within the EU digital certificates related to vaccines recognized by the European Medicines Agency will be issued, and that it is up to the member states to decide individually whether to accept vaccines from other manufacturers.
