Ivan Kontić, accused of the attempted assassination of the 28-year-old MM in Novi Sad, extradited to Serbia three days ago, was questioned at the Superior Prosecutor’s Office. His defense attorneys requested for the second time the disqualification of the acting prosecutor, as they explained, due to partiality in the procedure. They allege that there are no elements of the crime attributed to their client, that is, that the violence committed on August 24 was not an assassination attempt.
After a full three-hour hearing, Ivan Kontic’s defense attorneys said he described the incident to the prosecutor in detail on Aug. 24 and reiterated that he did not intend to kill 28-year-old MM that night.
Two days ago, he told the judge of the previous procedure that he did not escape from Serbia, but went to Montenegro, to his parents, before initiating any procedure against him.
He was extradited from Montenegro on Tuesday, almost a month after local police arrested him in a rented apartment in Podgorica with a warrant from Interpol.
It should be recalled that the international arrest warrant was issued in mid-September, when the Novi Sad High Prosecutor’s Office launched an official investigation against Kontić for the act of attempted murder.
This was preceded by the publication of a video of the brutal beating for which Kontić is accused on social media and questions from the public, as a result of which the authorities were silent about such violence for almost three weeks.
Ivan Kontić’s defense lawyers reiterate that they will present evidence that will refute the act against him.
Lawyers Zora Dobricanin Nikodinovic and Dejan Bugarski confirmed that their client was questioned and that he presented his defense and answered all questions raised. As they say, Kontić presented his defense in detail, denying that he ever thought about where he tried to kill anyone, especially Miljan Mandić on August 24 in Novi Sad, with whom he had good relations.
The lawyers say that it all started “when Mandic forbade him to enter the gambling house where he wanted to have a drink with friends”, and that later there was a kidnapping and a fight over a purse in which, as they say, Kontic believed that it was a gun.
The Superior Prosecutor’s Office was not announced after today’s hearing. When the video, which showed Kontić beating an unconscious man and then breaking both of his arms, was posted on social media, numerous questions were asked, including why authorities had not reacted earlier, how Kontić managed to cross the border, but also how it is possible that he was in this building, in the Basic Public Ministry, 15 days after the fact and only four days before the start of the investigation, for another case.
Shortly thereafter, it was established that it was no longer available to judicial authorities in Serbia.
To date, most of these questions have not been answered.
According to the decision of the investigating judge, Ivan Kontić remains in detention.
