The defendants Milan Radonjić and Ratko Romić also denied their guilt, while Miroslav Kurak is at large and is being tried in absentia.
The deputy prosecutor read the indictment stating that Curuvija’s murder was committed by order of an unknown person from the top of the then government, as well as that Markovic hired Radonjic, and hired Romic and Kurak.
– He was assassinated for low motives, for his appearance in the country and abroad and criticism of the Government – is stated in the prosecution’s indictment, in which the prosecution remained. Miroslav Kurak was appointed direct executor.
It should be recalled that, with the first verdict overturned by the Court of Appeals, the trial chamber assessed on the basis of the evidence presented that Kurak was not a murderer, but that an unknown person shot at Ćuruvija, but he and Romić were convicted under suspicion of helping an unidentified person.
Before the start of the new trial, Judge Snezana Jovanovic read part of the allegations of the Court of Appeals and asked everyone to indicate if they doubted the partiality of the panel that rendered the first verdict.
– Taking into account certain arguments of the Court of Appeals, which accepted the appeals of the defense and indicated that this court consisted of logical thought and reasoning, and is obliged to impartially evaluate the evidence, as well as to state that the court should not take an arbitrary decision, based on emotions and personal sympathies or personal relationship with the subject, my question is, do you doubt that the bias is greater? – Judge Jovanović asked before the opening of the main trial, but neither the prosecution nor the defense requested it, nor the exclusion of other members of the court panel.
