We closely followed his accurate forecasts during the fight with Covid-19, he was a member of the crisis staff for the suppression of the epidemic. When he received an invitation from the Presidency of the Republic of Serbia to attend a meeting on the occasion of the upcoming fight against the virus, he did not hesitate. He left the next day and he had only one thing in mind: use his experience to help people fight the invisible enemy.
Epidemiologist prof. Dr. Branislav Tiodorović said in an interview for “Blic” that the situation is now under control, but notes that we must not forget that the virus is still there. There were several controversies over crisis staff members on social media, and for him as a pensioner, the question often arose as to why he could move freely as a pensioner, and the others couldn’t, even though he was just doing his job. . He traveled the Belgrade-Nish route, went shopping with his wife when other pensioners from 4 to 7 in the morning … Today, when the epidemic is under control, when the numbers are optimistic, and also has many years of experience with Various epidemics, this one with the Covid-19 cannot be compared to any you have experienced in your decades-long career.
When did you receive the invitation and who invited you to reach out to crisis staff?
– I don’t know who proposed to me, but on February 26 I received an invitation from the president’s office. The headquarters of the crisis was formed on March 11. Although I have had conversations with the Institute of Public Health before, I have already given statements to the media about the importance of the next epidemic and the disease that has appeared. At that first meeting were all my colleagues who are at Headquarters, as well as state leaders. We are the first country to form a crisis team due to a corona infection. That’s a fact.
What were you thinking about? Did you know how much danger lurked?
– The information from China was quite important, but also disturbing for both the public and Europe. We knew the virus was coming. Normally, everything that is geographically far from a person, looks at it like this, “it is very far”. Although it was clear that he would move quickly to Europe, to our borders. Epidemics are spreading rapidly, we are also teaching students to transmit via the fastest means of transportation, that is, by plane. From there, the first attention was focused on airports. We were among the last four countries in the region where a case of the virus was reported. First is Slovenia, then Croatia, then Macedonia. We resisted well, and then it started.
What epidemic can you compare the Covid-19 fight to?
– No one can compare to this epidemic. I remember the 2009/10 flu pandemic. when we had a large number of sick and dead, but fewer than this. I remember the measles epidemic in Presevo in 1988, when we quickly ended an epidemic that was strong in 15 days. But we cannot compare something like this with anything, this is something that was strong and had to be endured and fought.
How long have you worked per day since the beginning of the state of emergency? You often traveled from Nis to Belgrade, and then to the surrounding towns and cities. How was your day at work?
– It was difficult, the trip more or less, but having a complete vision of the whole situation, getting to each place, was difficult both mentally and physically. He slept four hours a day, he was always on the move.
Were you afraid, did you think and did you take care of your health?
– I cared more about my family, if I move and communicate, I can endanger my wife and all of them in some way. They trusted me, I had a duty and a responsibility towards people, human life was at stake, if they invited me, that means they need my opinion and my experience. I protected myself as best I could and did my job.
Your wife is also retired, did she comply with the measure?
– She respected everything, rigorously. We went shopping when pensioners were allowed, from 4 to 7 in the morning. And I did, so I had to help her and do what was needed for the house. Then I spoke to the pensioners I met, they asked me how long this would last, they were all wearing masks, protection, these are people who were extremely disciplined.
There were people who called all of you who are on the Crisis Team. What affected you the most?
– I do not follow social networks, nor am I present there, but it happened that there were comments in some media that I could not understand. Although I directed some people to the right address, explaining that I was not the one to give certain answers, they still called me. That hit me. I was formed as a person to trust people until they disappointed me. It was important to me to save the population, reduce the number of infected, dead, and we knew there would be. This situation with the Gerontology Center in Nis is a difficult event for me, which did not have to happen if everyone acted responsibly.
Your predictions were always correct, you guessed well how the course of the epidemic would unfold. How did you do that?
– I couldn’t know, but I could guess based on epidemiological laws. Based on what was known, based on experience, current events, it could mean that the epidemic would continue its course. It was March 12, when I told the media that the number would likely increase significantly at Easter, and that our task was to reduce that number, reduce the epidemiological curve, and control it. Also, that we will have a decline after Easter, I relied on the fact that I followed the epidemic elsewhere, so I followed that path and, in my experience, predicted.
Has the state done its job well?
– The fact is that Serbia started earlier in relation to other countries when it started to introduce measures. What I can say is that the leaders of our state respected the opinions of the profession. Some part of the population did not like some measures, but believe me, that was the only solution and everything to prevent the epidemic.
Did the Ministry of Health and the health system function properly?
– What is evident is that our health care system did not crash and that we saved it. In particular, the Ministry of Health respected what we proposed as a group of experts. Like all countries, even those more developed than us, at first had a problem with testing, those who produced it certainly had to provide it first, and then others. In epidemics and pandemics, each country takes care of itself first and then the other. However, we received help from the Chinese at the right time, and we should not forget that, after the Russians in terms of the disinfection procedure, and that we received support at the right time.
What do you have to say to your people? Have we mastered the crown?
– The virus is still there and don’t forget it. Behind us is a lion fight, but don’t forget that it’s not over yet. We can say today, it’s fine, it’s under control, but the virus is still there. Be responsible, follow the recommended steps, and note that you are not done yet. All citizens know what to do, people have already understood everything and I think that in the end we are a responsible society.

Despite the difficult political and economic situation in the country, the period of operation of the Nis Clinical Center from 1993 to January 1997 was a great success. After a meeting at the Ministry of Health in late November 1996, on his return to Nis, Tiodorović resigned because his agreement with the Israeli company was not approved. The previous agreement envisaged that Nis would become the largest diagnostic center in the Balkans for scanners, magnetic resonance imaging, with 18 ultrasound devices for various purposes, with air devices, computerized biochemistry and histopathology. What is known to the Nis public, during the time when Tiodorović was the director of 12 women, ran the clinics and says the reasons are experience and good organization.
