By order of the Minister of Health, prof. Dr. Slobodan Milisavljevic was appointed crown suppression coordinator for the Sumadija region on April 1 this year. He, with his colleagues and associates, is one of the heroes of our time, who managed to avoid a real tragedy in Novi Pazar this spring.
This world-class breast surgeon, who with his knowledge raised this branch of surgery at the Kragujevac clinical center to the highest level in the world, faced a virus that ravages the entire world and claims lives on every continent. .
How does the fight against the kovid pandemic look from your point of view?
– Initially, corona was considered to be a respiratory virus. However, based on today’s findings, it is clear that it is a systemic virus that attacks the brain, liver, lungs … I am a breast surgeon, but in 2009, when there was an H1N1 pandemic, we had a large number of patients, we participated in the rehabilitation of that infection. When we arrived at Novi Pazar, and there were two anesthesiologists, an infectious disease specialist and two medical technicians on the team, we found a serious condition. They had a blast of infection in two or three days, a large influx of patients, about 250 a day. Everything coincided: political and religious gatherings, nobody respected the distance, people did not take care of themselves … They had a large number of infected doctors and nurses. There was no division into red and green zones, the patients came directly to the wards, they mixed infected with healthy ones … We immediately organized a kovid system, we conducted training on how to use protective equipment … No one can enter the hospital if they did not pass through the triage center of the Health Center …
When was the first result of such an organized work?
– In about ten days, order was established and a system created. We also needed to hire the police to get people to follow the rules. The Serbian army also helped a lot, they sent doctors from the Military Medical Academy … We soon did the same in Sjenica and Tutin. That is why the important message for everyone is not to relax in any way. People need to understand that this is a first-class killer virus, which makes no difference by religion, nation, or age. The corona virus literally attacks everything equally. That we did it, we saw it when people came up to us on the street, congratulated us, put up banners with “Thank you Kragujevac”, “Thank you Kraljevo”.
Everyone is talking about the second wave of the epidemic, do you know when it will start, are there any predictions?
– It is a great unknown if another wave of viruses awaits us. It is not known if it will appear in the fall or winter, like this one or as a common seasonal virus. We use the reduction in patient numbers to service the team and rest people, so we’re pretty much done. But, we are already noticing a gradual increase in the number of outpatient patients, which should be a cautionary tale. If possible, public gatherings, close contacts, and working from home should be avoided.
Operations and in the middle of an epidemic
The non-covid patients, who did not suffer due to the epidemic, were not neglected at the Kragujevac Clinical Center. As part of endoscopic thoracic surgery, 623 VAC aids have been performed so far, that is, operations without opening the thorax. Thanks to Dr. Milisavljević, this clinic is one of the best hospitals in the world, performing WAC lobectomy, anatomical resections of the lungs, which are the most difficult operations. To date, 23 of them have been performed, and a couple of months ago, for the first time with access from the abdomen, through a three-centimeter hole, when half of the lung was removed without an incision in the chest.
