Judging by the latest forecasts from meteorologists, there is little chance that we will enter the New 2021 with snow, but the fog is sure to be waiting for us for the next ten days. Unfortunately, it also means increased air pollution in urban areas.

Although in previous years we were used to December being in a true winter atmosphere with snow, according to meteorologist Nedeljko Todorović, it will pass without snowfall, but also without significantly lower temperature.

– As for New Year’s Eve, it is still ungrateful to predict what the weather will be like and if there will be snowfall, but in the next seven or eight days, that is, until 23-24. December, there will be no cooler or warmer weather, but fog awaits us in the morning, and in some places for most of the day, Todorovic said.

Changeable weather in January

He added that current temperatures in Serbia are above average values for this time of year. On Saturday, the first day of the weekend, as expected, the southeast wind will intensify, which at the beginning of next week will stir fog and clouds in the Košava area, so the weather will be brighter, “but without a significant change in temperature. “

– Between December 25 and 28, a brief cooling and cloudiness with precipitation is expected. Then snow will fall on the mountains, while in the lower regions the probability of precipitation will be 50 percent. Eventually, at night, and sometime in the morning, there could be snow in the lower areas, but in Vojvodina and Belgrade there is little chance that it will remain, if at all. After December 28, slightly warmer weather is expected and in general no more serious cooling with snow is expected in early January, thinks Nedeljko Todorović, and concludes that during the first month of 2021 we will have variable weather with a change of rain and snow, but it is not yet known what the intensity of the cooling will be and if it will cause more snow. “

Djordje Djuric, also a well-known meteorologist, announced on his Facebook profile the weather forecast for the next ten days and stated that in that period still “we will not have snow and real winters in sight, although we entered the climatological winter on December 1”. .

– This is the longest possible weather forecast that we can be sure of. The weather is stable and dry for now, there is no chance of precipitation in the next ten days. The fog will be higher in the lowlands, causing a reversal such that temperatures will be higher in the mountains than in the lowlands. As the weather awaits us on New Year’s Eve, we will still be able to forecast more reliably in a few days, Đurić explains.

Chance of snow after December 26

Finally, the well-known Novi Sad meteorologist, Marko Cubrilo, predicts that snow in Serbia could start to fall only after Christmas according to the Gregorian calendar. He stated in his Facebook post that around December 22, when the winter calendar begins, a temporary worsening of the weather is expected with less cooling, but that after December 25, “the chances of a more concrete cooling with snow in the lowlands. “

– Unfortunately for everyone who wants a true winter atmosphere for Christmas according to the Gregorian calendar, it is less and less likely, because our region would be in a relatively warm air current from the Southwest until around December 27, and it would certainly be too warm for snow in the lowlands. Of course, it’s still possible for all synoptics to “rush” a bit and cold air catch up with us sooner, but for now it seems unlikely. Around December 24, there is further deterioration with rain, snow in the mountains, and a strong south and southwest wind. The chances of snow are significantly higher after December 26, when the models simulate the breaking of cold air over our part of Europe with a secondary cyclogenesis over the Adriatic. Such a synoptic development could bring us the first real snow in the lowlands this winter – Čubrilo concluded in his announcement.

Possible major air pollution

Which is true, without snow and rain as natural air purifiers, judging by this weather forecast for the next ten days, Serbia will face an increase in air pollution.

– When meteorologists announce a thermal inversion, that temperatures are higher in the mountains than in the lowlands, it means a reduction in air pressure and the retention of fog in the lowlands. Given the expected lower temperatures in the lowlands, which will cause increased warming, this means an increase in air condensation, but also the concentration of suspended PM particles in the air, which remain in the form of smog over urban areas says Biljana Mladenovic, an air quality expert. at the Valjevo Institute of Public Health.
