Mountaineer Jovan Cvetković and his friend, while exploring the inaccessible terrain near the village of Prlit, about ten kilometers from Zaječar, on September 13, they found a horrifying sight in front of a cave: a human skull and a bone stabbed with a stick! They undoubtedly entered, where they found a pile of human bones.
– Two complete skulls and another skull fragment are impressed in a cave. There were at least three skulls. I don’t know about the other bones, I’m a layman, but the skulls are recognizable – says Cvetković.
He adds that the remains of the fire showed that someone had recently been in the cave, although it is difficult to reach it. The day after reporting the case to the police, Cvetković led the forensic team to the site of the discovery.
Rite scene
– The strangest thing is that the skull and some part of the body, I mean the pelvis, were attached to a stick, which was driven into the ground. Someone was having fun or doing some rituals. The forensic scientists did everything they had to do, took photographs, fixed the numbers, collected the bones from the bag, the inventor explains.
One of the most famous Serbian sectologists, Dimitrija Pastuović, told Kurir that according to the description of the eyewitnesses who saw the bones hanging from a stick, and the photos obtained by our newspaper, everything indicates that this is a ritual performed by the Quimband sect:
– This is a black magic ritual, it looks like Quimband, what they call voodoo magic. There is also the possibility that the bones were excavated from someone’s grave and transferred there. If they bring the bones, that’s what Quimband does, it’s raise the dead, necromancy. They react in a similar way, perform similar rituals and invoke the soul of the deceased, with obligatory sacrifice. It remains to be seen if animals or something similar were found at the site where the human remains were found.
Archaeologist and researcher of skeletal remains from a large number of archaeological sites, Dr. Sofija Stefanović, says for Kurir that it is important that citizens report such findings to the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments.
– Based on the photographs it can be seen that they are human bones, two central bones can be seen in the pelvis, they are the remains of at least two individuals. These are not buried people, they are not graves, they are scattered bones. Since all the soft tissues have already rotted away, it is clear that it is something older that would also be of value to the Institute. It is not possible to guess which period is in question, the analysis will show it, but it is obvious that all the soft tissues have disintegrated, and that cannot happen in less than ten years, said Stefanović.
The Zajecar police told Kurir that they had carried out an investigation, collected evidence and turned the case over to the Zajecar High Prosecutor’s Office, from which they say they are still collecting information.
The mayor of Zajecar, Boško Ničić, points out to Kurir that, according to his information from the police, they found no basis to initiate any further proceedings:
– Forensic scientists have determined that the bones are over a hundred years old and not of major archaeological significance. They assume they are from the WWI period. There are no reports from that period that any crime has been committed.
