What to do when we find an injured bird?

It needs to be transported to the vet or reception center as soon as possible. The bird should be placed in a box large enough with air vents to reduce the stress that arises during transport. If you are not an expert, do not try to repair the injury yourself, as you will be in danger of worsening the condition and the bird will die.

The baby eagle was found by the security worker of the hydroelectric plant, who immediately informed the Uvar service of the Special Nature Reserve “Uvac”.

The injuries were found to have been caused by a firearm. The wounds were several days old and infected. Despite the fact that the bird was found a few days after being injured, another was expected to pass by to be transported to Belgrade. In the end, the eagle succumbed to its injuries on the way to the Belgrade Zoo, where it was supposed to lie down.

That is why so much time has passed, from the Society for the Protection and Study of Birds, they explain to us that there are not enough resources.

This points to the fact that the institutions dealing with the protection and care of wildlife and nature in general do not have sufficient capacity in terms of finances, manpower and technology. If as a society and state we want to seriously address the global problem of biodiversity loss, more attention and investments should be paid to the protection of nature and the formation of institutions for a rapid reaction, “said the Society’s B92.net for the Protection and Study of the Birds of Serbia.

They claim that 10 large raptors such as the bald eagle, the white-tailed eagle and the griffon vulture will be killed in this way each year. It is an even more tenuous fact that nature does not fast to compensate for suffering.

“Given the slow reproduction of 10 birds that die each year, the numbers are extremely high. Eagles raise very few young, which take years to mature sexually, and any loss of individuals in the wild is a major blow to their populations. Although many do not like them, they would like to put them on the wall of their living room, in a cafe, restaurant or hunting lodge. Birds of prey are a symbol of strength, speed, freedom, haughtiness, and these are mostly traits that they are missing in today’s man, “the organization said. Eagles, widely distributed and numerous, today venture into wild mountainous landscapes or the alluvial plains of large rivers.

The Society for the Protection and Study of Birds of Serbia immediately submitted a report, but did not receive any new information from the competent authorities. However, they point out that it is most likely Root hunting firearms since the vet checked the presence himself.

However, they also explained to us that it is impossible to determine who fired from the chair, because no ballistic suspension is performed on that weapon.

Some of the public blamed the hunters for the case of the slain eagle. On the other hand, hunting associations defend themselves through hunting codes and hunting regulations for protected species, as well as by prohibiting hunting within the Special Nature Reserve “Uvac”.

DZPPS says that the members of the hunting associations deny all the similar cases that they have been registering for three decades, as well as that so far they have never encountered a person other than a hunter in poaching with the use of firearms.

Article 269 of the Penal Code provides for high fines or long prison sentences for killing and mistreating animals (especially protected species). As incidents of this type are on the rise, the question arises as to whether the sanctions are adequate.

“The existing sanctions would be more than sufficient if there were cases that received their epilogue and the perpetrators were prosecuted. Whenever charges are filed against unidentified persons, and the system that must investigate or prosecute the perpetrator does not have the will or sufficient knowledge to take the case to the end, these punitive measures and some future ones can be considered a dead letter on paper ”, they say from this association and add that in cases like this, justice is not usually done.

The Society for the Protection and Study of Birds of Serbia asks potential eyewitnesses of this crime to provide more information to the competent authorities and help clarify the case. Also, if they wish to remain anonymous, they can provide them with information about the case and then forward it to the competent state authorities for processing.

In relation to this case, we also contacted the Ministry of Ecology and Environmental Protection. We did not receive a response until the text was published.
