This morning, the Minister of Health, Zlatibor Lončar, met with the directors of the covid hospitals in Serbia.

The meeting followed a dramatic deterioration in the epidemiological situation in Serbia over the past week and a record number of new infections and deaths from coronary heart disease.

– Belgrade has the biggest problems with accommodation capacity. We agreed that in half an hour we would start sending minor cases to Niška Banja and temporary hospitals in Niš and Kragujevac in order to free up space for more serious cases. That way, we could wait for the night more calmly, Lončar said, adding that several hospitals are opening in Leskovac.

Loncar said that today the new measures proposed by the Crisis Staff were accepted.

– The working hours of the facilities are shortened to 6 in the afternoon. Another thing is the mandatory use of a mask indoors, but also outdoors where there are more than five people, especially at crossings and pedestrian intersections, Lončar said.

The government has also prescribed the provision of work from home to all employees whose work process allows it. A new measure is the ban on gathering more than five people indoors and outdoors.

– We will also increase public transport to make it less crowded. The bus will not stop at the next station if the vehicle’s capacity is at 50 percent, until the crowd clears, Loncar stressed, adding that the measures will go into effect Tuesday morning and will last 10 days.

Among the new measures is the strict control of the implementation of home isolation, home quarantine (self-isolation), as well as all other anti-epidemic measures that are in force.

Almost 1,500 doctors were infected

Loncar said that currently 1,402 healthcare workers are infected with the corona virus, and 53 of them are in hospital.

– Immeasurable thanks to all the doctors, nurses, technicians, waitresses and cleaners who now work in kovid hospitals. If we can, for them and for people’s health, respect the measures and cut off contacts – Lončar said.

The minister added that the virus had entered the family and that everyone must adhere to epidemiological measures. Loncar calls on citizens to avoid mass celebrations to preserve their health.

– This is the only way we can help our heroes and save people’s health – Lončar said.

Crisis staff member Mijomir Pelemis says he is concerned about the number of patients hospitalized in intensive care and the number of deaths from the effects of the corona virus.

– It is very important that the measures are controlled. I ask everyone to respect the measures – said Pelemis.

The director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic, Goran Stevanović, said that an increasing number of patients with a severe clinical picture and that the middle-aged working-age population is in greater danger.

– In the Infectious Diseases Clinic we receive every morning with too many patients whom we place in temporary beds. As soon as we release someone in their place, we accept a new patient, says Stevanović.

The number of patients who have tried to treat themselves is also growing.

– They come in five or six days with serious clinical pictures and as soon as they arrive they end up in the intensive care unit – Stevanović said and asked citizens to call the ambulance as soon as they notice the symptoms.
