Dejan Jovanović (29) from the village of Deč near Šimanovac died because, as suspected, his uncle’s brother, Milenko Jovanović (48), shot him in the head with a pistol, in celebration of the child’s birthday.
The tragedy occurred on Saturday in the yard of suspect Milenko, who was celebrating her youngest son’s birthday, and is suspected of negligent homicide.
They joked all day
– We celebrate the child’s second birthday. Dejan was with us all day. He loved Milenko very much and he loved him too. They joked all the time, baked roasts together, says Milenko’s wife, Ljubica, continuing:
– My husband fired a bullet with a pistol around 7pm, for fun. Then he put it on the window, but soon he wanted to remove the gun from there because of the children. When he took it in his hand, he fired. The bullet went through the refrigerator, which was on the patio, and hit Dejan, who was sitting at a table behind the refrigerator, in the back of the head.
Ljubica says there were 15 guests at the celebration and they all came together to help Dejan.
– His cousin poured water on him, they raised their heads and his eye moved. They say he was breathing then – says the woman crying, commenting that happiness and joy instantly turned into screams, pain and tears.
She explains that her husband Milenko put the injured Dejan in the car and took him to the doctor in Pećince, for which he returned home.
– He was crying, he left Dejan alive. He repeated: “What did I do!” It is very difficult for him – says Ljubica.
According to her, Milenko himself called the police and told them what had happened, that is, he explained “that he himself does not know how he fired the weapon.”
“Lack of care or fate destroyed two families,” he added.

The family of the murdered also cried yesterday.
– I can’t believe it, I was left without a son who didn’t even step on an ant, and again, he was killed by a man who Dejan loved very much – says the inconsolable father Stevan and adds: – Dejan adored Milenko and her children. I don’t know what happened exactly, I wasn’t there, but whatever it is, Milenko will get out of jail and my son won’t get out of the grave. I don’t know why he needed that gun at all, and I heard he has it and has been hiding it for 10 years – says the shocked father.

The wife of the arrested Milenko says that while waiting for the police, she prayed to God that Dejan would survive.
– If he had known that Dejan was dead, I think he would have killed himself immediately, he loved him very much. Our youngest son, whose birthday we celebrated, was named Dejan in his honor, explains the surprised woman.
MUST BE MARRIED
Instead of a wedding, a funeral
Dejan’s parents say he planned to go to Germany next year to get married.
– He had a fiancee there, a German one. We told her what had happened, she was terribly shocked. She immediately said that she would send us the money and everything she needed and that she planned to come to the funeral. Instead of preparing their wedding, this will happen to us – Dejan’s father yelled out loud.
