Students who are determined to defend the polyclinic are also singled out by doctors

Following the announcement that the student polyclinics in Belgrade, Nis and Novi Sad will be abolished with the new health optimization plan, health workers and students also rebelled. They say that adequate attention to the health of students through student polyclinics is not a legacy of the past, as presented in the plan, but an investment in the future.

The abolition of student polyclinics should not be allowed, the students are clear about it. Prime Minister Ana Brnabić translated into a letter her request for the state to renounce its intention to annex student polyclinics to local health centers.

“If that request is not adopted, we will bring the students together and invite all the students to a joint fight, both institutional and in street protests,” said Milan Karavezic of the Student Front.

They also say that the government should not save on students and their health, because it saves for its own future. The students’ demands are also supported by the Belgrade Center for Human Rights. They claim that the abolition of the student polyclinics in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Nis, as envisaged in the plan for the optimization of health care, would have the greatest impact on students in the interior.

“Now imagine the situation in which a young man has to run on a bus, go to a health center in his place of residence in order to attend a specialist examination, who knows when it will be scheduled. We are aware that we are awaiting specialist examinations, “explains Nevena Nikolić from the Belgrade Center for Human Rights.

Doctors warn: there was not enough time for discussion

The problems are not only related to waiting, but also to the fact that students living in the dormitories of their residence cannot move to Belgrade. Doctors also point out such illogicals and warn that there was not enough time to seriously discuss the plan, so they presented their proposals to the Ministry of Health.

“The first thing is not to touch anything, to keep polyclinics organized like that. The second is to connect with the Health Care Institute at the national level, with borders in Nis and Novi Sad ”, says Dr. Mariana Pesic.

They also state that they received guarantees from the Ministry of Health, which is in charge of making the final draft and presenting it to the Government, that all suggestions made during the public debate that ends on Monday will be taken into account.

The students also scheduled a new protest for Monday, this time in front of the Student Polyclinic building in Krunska.
