KBC “Bežanijska kosa” deputy director Dr. Bogdan Crnokrak said the hospital left the kovid system on February 15 and that since June 23, when it entered the kovid system, more than 4,000 patients have been treated. Almost 600 patients were in the intensive care unit.
– They were patients of both sexes, it seems to me that there are more men, of all ages, from the second to the tenth decade of life – says Crnokrak.
He says they weren’t ready for a large percentage of relatively young patients.
– The average life expectancy of our patients was significantly lower than the average life expectancy of the patients we treat normally. We weren’t prepared for 25 percent of patients to be under 45, and that just happened, the doctor notes.
He says that some of them suffered from chronic diseases, but others did not.
– The severity of the clinical picture was the greatest challenge, that is, the dynamics of change in the clinical condition of the patients. We have had situations where the condition of patients who are completely stable suddenly worsens. We had to develop a monitoring system for these patients in order to recognize them early and transfer them to the next level of treatment, explains Crnokrak.
President of the Association of Neurologists of Serbia prof. Dr. Ranko Raičević says that a third of patients who have covid have significant neurological phenomenology: encephalitis and stroke.
MORE AND MORE HIT ON YOUNG PEOPLE
He says that there are a large number of people who have suffered from covid and a high incidence of stroke among young people. Dr. Bogdan Crnokrak says that the connection between inflammatory diseases and thrombosis has long been recognized, which is why all patients receive anticoagulant therapy.
– We find ourselves in clinical practice with thrombosis in the venous system – 99.9 percent of the thromboses that we face are thrombosis in the venous system with all its consequences and complications. Thrombosis in the arteries is very rare, explains Crnokrak.
However, he says that something strange happened to the covidual patients, for which they were not prepared: a small number of patients who had venous thrombosis and a large number of patients with arterial thrombosis.
– Arterial thrombosis is a condition that occurs most often in patients who have severely diseased blood vessels. Here, it happened that the patients suffered thrombosis in healthy blood vessels. We didn’t know why this was happening, says Dr. Crnokrak.
He says they are trying to find a reason to find a group of patients who are at potential risk. Dr. Crnokrak also emphasizes that the thrombosis patients were relatively young people, between the ages of 40 and 65, mostly men.
