Montenegrin President Milo Đukanović said tonight that he does not fear any criminal charges and that he will not resign as President of the State, and that he will use his term to the end.
– I have already answered that, of course, I will not because we have now had parliamentary elections. The Democratic Party of Socialists, which I lead, remains by far the strongest parliamentary party in Montenegro, having also garnered more than 35 percent of the support of the Montenegrin electorate in these elections. In these elections, we do not decide on the president of Montenegro. I have a strong intention to use my term to the end for the benefit of the state I am in charge of – said Djukanovic for H1.
He claimed that something happened that usually happens in democratic societies.
– It is not about any fall, nor is it about falling at any time, including myself. In 2018, I was elected president of Montenegro in direct elections with 54 percent support and a term that will last just under three years. In the parliamentary elections, there was no decline again, Djukanovic said for the first half.
After 30 years in power, the DPS, along with its coalition partners, won one term less than the new parliamentary majority, he added.
– There was no unworthy result for the pro-European policy in Montenegro. Something has happened that is common in democratic societies. Montenegro aspires to be a democratic society, Djukanovic said.
According to him, everything that happens after the parliamentary elections shows the tendency of the people who lead the winning coalition to actually correct what their pre-election announcements were.
– During the campaign, the majority of those representing the new parliamentary majority advocated a policy that essentially sharply confronted all the earlier achievements of modern Montenegro. They said that the problem arose when Montenegro restored its independence and made some decisions that were, as they like to say, contrary to the interests of the Serbian and Russian people in the Balkans, and that with their victory they would change Montenegro’s strategic course – he said. – They said that they do not want to change the strategic direction of Montenegro’s foreign policy, accept Montenegro’s membership in NATO and that they want to continue the movement towards the European Union. You have well noticed that this is a new rhetoric. As serious people, we should not judge the ads, but the facts – he pointed out.
