The famous Rooster of Sofronio, which is one of the symbols of childhood for many generations around the world, turns 74 today, writes the portal Nova.rs.
His nasty jokes, his tricks at the expense of other animals, and his constant chatter are just some of his characteristics that we remember him for, he writes. Nova.rs.
How the character of Sofronio the rooster was born
The inspiration for her character came a few years before she officially appeared on screens. Its creators, Robert McMimson and Warren Foster, who worked for the film company “Warner Bros.”, already in the early 1940s imagined a cartoon hero who would bear the characteristics of Senator Clegorne.
Senator Klegorn was a popular hero who appeared on Fred Allen’s radio shows in those years, and his character was played by Kenny Delmar. Sophronius took many of the phrases and expressions Clegorn said, while inheriting the southern accent of the Sheriff, a famous character from radio shows of the 1930s.
The voice of this charismatic rooster was given for the first time by Mel Blank, “the man with a thousand voices”, known for creating the voices of many animated characters of his time: Dusko Dugoushka, Duck Dacha, Twitter, Sylvester, Fast Gonzalez, but also many others. What sets Sofronija apart from other cartoon characters is her unusually high voice, as well as her specific southern accent.
As far as domestic dubbing is concerned, the first voice in this area was loaned to Sofronija by Atelje 212 actor Ljubiša Bačić, who also lent his voice to all the great and scary characters from animated films like Popeye’s opponent Badža and Njupadžija from Smurfs.
How Sofronio is portrayed
Sophronius is a tall, clumsy rooster with a southern accent and as such is the tallest among the characters in “Moon Tunes.” He is talkative, stubborn and mischievous. He lives on a farm in Louisiana with other animals, and the movies show his everyday life filled with interesting events, chases, and tricks.
Sophronius likes to be the figure of the mentor to characters younger and smaller than him, which is especially true of little Kopac, to whom he says phrases like “Pay attention, son” and “Look at me when I tell you, boy.” .
A recognizable sound in his films is the song “Camptown Races”, originally performed by Stephen Foster. By the way, almost every movie about Sofroni begins with him singing.
Who are Sophroni’s rivals?
Sophrony’s rivals on the farm are a dog, but also a Sylvester cat, a Mica chicken, a Kobac bird, Nebojsa, but also many other animals.
Sophronius appears in a total of 29 animated shorts made between 1946 and 1964, all directed by Robert McMimson.
