It is possible that the new parliamentary elections will be held in December, and that the votes for the president of the state and local government in Belgrade will be organized in March 2022, Danas has learned unofficially from sources in the Serbian political scene.

As our interlocutors explain, the President of Serbia and leader of the Serbian Progressive Party, Aleksandar Vučić, wants to “go to the polls as soon as possible and vote for the new composition of the National Assembly”, because he expects better results at the national level, which it should be encouraging to the voters of the SNS, at the local level ”.

“Committees of progressives are working full time these weeks to mobilize members, verify secure votes and join the party,” sources from Danas say.

At the same time, it is speculated that it is “a matter of time” before the president of the Serbian Patriotic Union, Aleksandar Šapić, joins the SNS.

According to the assertions of our interlocutors, Šapić “will certainly be a candidate for mayor of Naprednik”, but “a tactical decision will be made from which position he will participate in the race.”

One of the reasons for calling the parliamentary elections later this year would be related to Vučić’s desire “not to allow the opposition to have more space in the media with a national frequency long before they return to the polls.”

In this context, it is alleged that the ruling party “is willing to a certain extent” to meet the demands of the opposition for better electoral conditions, so it is believed that in March an inter-party dialogue will begin under the auspices of the European Parliament, debates and the like will be organized months before the elections, as soon as possible. “

Opposition parties and movements, on the other hand, want the new parliament to be voted on as late as possible, to achieve significant changes in media coverage of “regime critics” and the electoral system, including better control of polls. .

Let us remind you, Aleksandar Vučić said at the press conference on October 20, 2020, that the government to be formed is also a limited-duration assembly. Parliamentary elections, along with presidential elections, will be held on April 3, 2022 at the latest, the Serbian president said.

Just a week ago, Vučić said that the ministers should “give back the energy, the enthusiasm, not think about the next elections and not deal with their position in the elections, but with their work and what will be left behind us.”
