Snow continues to fall throughout Serbia, most of it in the mountains: more than 70 centimeters in Kopaonik, 40 in Stara Planina and about half a meter in the Zlatibor and Peshterska plateau, and freezing rain falls in Tutin, leaving many rural households without electricity, writes RTS.
An emergency situation has been declared in the municipality of Doljevac due to the overflowing of the river. An orange weather alarm is in effect.
Half a meter of snow in Zlatibor
During the night about 20 centimeters of snow fell in the Užice area, so there is currently around half a meter of snow in Zlatibor and in some mountainous places even more.
The winter service is in the field and the roads have been cleared overnight. There is a layer of snow on the roads, including the main road, and the second priority roads are currently being cleared.
Approximately 70,000 consumers had problems with the electricity supply
The first and second priority roads are passable, except for the section of highway E-80 near Crvena Reka in the direction of Pirot, said Angelina Redzic of the National Information Center.
According to her, around 70,000 consumers had or have problems with the electricity supply.
Emergency situation in Doljevac
An emergency situation has been declared in the municipality of Doljevac due to the overflow of the waterways. 16 locals staying in Doljevac were evacuated from the village of Sainovac.
Snow slowed down traffic on the “Milos Veliki” highway on the Preljina-Obrenovac section and in Divcibare, where the height of the snow cover is 30 centimeters.
Due to snow and landslides, the E-80 road near Crvena Reka in the direction of Pirot is the only first-priority impassable route, the Serbian Roads announce. Truck traffic is prohibited on certain mountain sections, and drivers are advised to be careful and have the mandatory winter gear.
Work is underway to clear the streets of Belgrade at night
When it comes to Belgrade, there is between 10 and 15 centimeters of snow, and even more in the wider area of the city.
In the words of the head of the JKP “Belgrade Road” Winter Service, Zeljko Maravic, he has been working on the cleanup for the second night in a row and so far there have been no major problems.
– First we remove the snow with machines and then we sprinkle the roads. The snow is strong, so with the help of communal services, we remove the branches that fall under the weight of the snow. When the first priority, which is 80 percent, is completed, the side streets are addressed. We must not allow the streets below the climb to be slippery, Maravić told RTS.
In the wider area of Belgrade, the snow cover is twice as large as the central streets and 93 teams are working on clearing it.
