The Novi Sad Appeal Court upheld the verdict of the Stara Pazova Court of First Instance, which sentenced Srdjan Skrbic (43) from Stari Banovci and Miroslav Kosic (40) from Zabalj to three years in prison each for desecrating and stealing the grave of the teacher Dragica Krstic of Stari Banovci. The two were sent to serve their prison terms.

Skrbic and Kosic were suspected of moving a concrete headstone in early December last year, and then removing the remains of the coffin master, to remove from the remains the gold jewelry with which Dragica was buried. Although they both denied this crime, their guilt was established during the trial.

The evidence presented in court confirmed that they were behind the horrible crime that is still talked about in Stari Banovci, and that it was discovered by a worker of the PE “Purity” who arrived that morning to clear the road of the cemetery.

The excavated grave and the skull on the headstone shook the worker who had to seek medical help. At first, the police, as well as the locals, thought it was a sectarian rite, but that someone would steal gold jewelry from the coffin of the buried deceased, nobody expected that. When it was determined that the box was lacking in gold jewelry, the police immediately directed the investigation into the theft and arrested the perpetrators within days.

Srdjan Skrbic, who was already in jail for robbery, came out from behind the walls of the Sremska Mitrovica Penitentiary less than a month before this crime. It is assumed that there he met Kosić, with whom he desecrated and stole the master’s grave.

– Miroslav came to him at Stare Banovce and then they thought about how to get the money. At one point, Srdjan recalled how Dragica was buried in gold jewelry 25 years ago and suggested a terrifying idea, says a source from our newspaper’s investigation, adding that they immediately sold the stolen gold for 400 euros.
