The boy was left unattended in the car for almost three hours and the police established that a warrant had been issued for a prior crime.
– At the time the police were looking for him, Slađan was watching the game in a betting shop across the street, as if he had not left the girl alone in the car. The policemen were surprised when they found the child without adult supervision and immediately began looking for the owner through the car’s search, they expected him to appear at any moment, but that did not happen, says a media outlet.
He adds that Sladjan tried to justify himself by leaving the boy alone for a short time, but police discovered that the entire game was spent at the gambling shop.
On the other hand, eyewitnesses to the event, a couple from Novi Sad, said that they called the police when they saw an unsupervised child in the car.
– The man parked in the center of the city and went to the other end of the street, about 150 meters where the pedestrian zone begins. My wife and I noticed that the girl was alone in the car, but we thought they left her for a while – says a resident of Novi Sad.
The boy, he says, was curled up in the back seat of the car.
– The boy was curled up and crying. As there was a police patrol nearby, we approached them and told them that we were surprised that she was alone – she says.
The married couple say that the policemen approached the car and asked the girl through the window where her mother and father were.
– She was sobbing. He said he was cold. Somehow she managed to open the door at our suggestion, so the policeman took her in his arms and carried her to the official car to warm up. They bought him a juice and a muffin because he said he was hungry, they say and add that he managed to say that “dad went somewhere”.
– My wife and I waited to see who was the father who left a two-year-old boy for almost three hours, locked in the dead cold and darkness. The gentleman, when he arrived, began to open the driver’s door without even looking in the back seat to see where his daughter was. Then the police approached him and we left – says a Novi Sad resident.
Sladjan M. was arrested on suspicion of having committed the crime of neglect and abuse of a minor, and the girl was returned to her mother in cooperation with the Center for Social Work.
“The mother was at home with the baby on Thursday night,” says the source, adding that it turned out that the Misdemeanor Court issued an order against her.
– He was detained for up to 48 hours and urgent measures were imposed: temporary expulsion from the apartment and a ban on contacting and approaching the minor – adds the source.
