Many spent the night outdoors, by the fire or sleeping in cars, while some stayed in barracks and hotels in Zagreb.
Heavy machinery worked through the night and damaged buildings were demolished in the center of Petrinja. Electricity came in during the night, but most of the people in the whole area have no heat because the chimneys are damaged. The trucks come from all over Croatia with help, from food to clothes.
The Serbian village of Majske Poljana was razed. More than 90 percent of buildings are so damaged that it is no longer possible to live in them. Two bulldozers removed the rubble overnight, and help is expected for the unfortunate people today. There are five dead in the village, two Serbs, Darko Kozic and Dusan Bulat, Roma Mile Jurkovic and two Croatians from Bosnia and Herzegovina, father and son Franjo and Mario Tomic.
A thirteen-year-old girl from mixed marriage, Laura C., died in Petrinja, and Stanko Zec, a church organist, died in Žužina.
Serbs are also among those injured, and Serbian religious buildings and churches in that area were severely damaged.
The new series of earthquakes caused additional problems and buildings in Zagreb, Zaprešić and Karlovac were also damaged. Sisak hospital, which will not be able to function for a long time, was also badly damaged and patients were transferred to Zagreb and Karlovac. Zagreb’s hospitals were also damaged, mainly the children’s hospital in the city center, but also many other facilities in the Croatian capital.
