Many travelers “forget” that valuable gifts are also goods that are subject to the same regulations as any other, so they must be registered when entering or leaving the country. The same occurs with luxury watches, whose non-registration at the border is not a rare case, which is why in the last month three attempts to smuggle expensive watches, valued at thousands of euros, were thwarted unnoticed.

The latest in a series of such cases occurred on November 21, 2020, at the Horgos junction, when customs agents found a men’s Rolex worth around 8,000 euros under the passenger seat of a Porsche.

It was attempted to be smuggled by a 30-year-old Turkish national, who arrived at the crossing on Saturday night, traveling with a co-driver from Germany to Turkey in a Porsche with German license plates.

During the detailed check of the vehicle, customs officials found an original box of an expensive Rolex men’s watch under the passenger seat, which also contained an invoice.

However, the phenomenon of luxury watch smuggling is most frequently faced by customs agents at Belgrade’s “Nikola Tesla” airport, who have discovered and seized up to 47 precious watches with a total value of more than 1.1 million euros in the last three years.

Thus, on October 30, 2020, a 28-year-old Serbian citizen who arrived from the United States discovered a “Brightling Nightmare” watch valued at about $ 5,000.

Although she claimed she had nothing to report, customs agents found a guarantee for the watch she was carrying in her bag.

Something similar happened at the airport two days earlier, on October 28, 2020, when a passenger arrived on a flight from Istanbul with a Rolex bought in Montenegro.

In other words, on the same day, upon leaving Montenegro, the passenger certified the hourly tax refund documents for almost 11 thousand euros and traveled to Istanbul, where he boarded a flight to Belgrade.

Thanks to the exchange of information with the Montenegrin customs, it was possible to locate the movement of passengers and avoid attempts to evade the payment of tariffs.

We remind you that citizens of Serbia have the privilege of bringing goods worth up to 100 euros. However, they can carry more valuable goods than the established limit, but are then subject to the collection of duties. If someone transports goods worth a total of 3,000 euros, which is clearly intended for personal needs, and not for later resale, the so-called abbreviated customs regime will be applied at the border. This procedure is carried out with a single customs rate of ten percent and a VAT rate, which in most cases is 20 percent. If the merchandise has a value greater than 3,000 euros, it will be cleared through customs.
