Vučić noted that by 2050, Serbia will be a low-carbon society with a competitive and resource-efficient economy, providing citizens with new green jobs and quality life in a climate-resilient society.

Addressing the International Conference on the Fifth Anniversary of the Paris Agreement, Vucic highlighted that Serbia has developed its long-term Low Carbon Development Strategy with an Action Plan aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and 2050. .

“We are ready to increase our ambition more than three times, by 2030, in accordance with our revised determined national contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions,” said Vucic.

In numbers, that means a 13.2 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2010 and 33.3 percent compared to 1990, Vucic noted.

“Conditionally, with additional support, we can increase our ambition by more than five times,” said the Serbian president.

To achieve that goal, he notes, Serbia is constantly striving to improve energy efficiency and use a higher proportion of renewable energy sources in electricity production, industry, domestic heating and transportation.

The dynamics to achieve these goals, Vučić emphasized, is defined by the Draft Strategy for Low Carbon Development with the Action Plan and the future Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan, which should be adopted soon.

“We have a great task ahead of us and we must aim high, despite the challenges of the pandemic. By implementing the Climate Change Law, we will ensure energy security and resource efficiency, increase competitiveness and green economic growth, while we reduce vulnerability to climate change and ensure social development and environmental protection. ” Vucic stressed.

Work to improve energy efficiency

According to him, all these measures will improve air quality, which will have an even greater positive impact on human health.

Vučić also noted that the long-term costs of not taking any action in the field of climate change are 53 billion euros higher than the costs of implementing the Strategy.

He also noted that losses and damages from climate change exceed five billion euros compared to 2000, adding that “intensification of climatic extremes” is expected.

That is why adaptation is included in the national NDC and Serbia is working on its National Adaptation Plan, Vucic added.

The hosts of the online Climate Summit are the United Nations, the United Kingdom and France, in association with Chile and Italy, and the meeting represents a step towards COP26, which will be hosted by the United Kingdom, next November in Glasgow.
