SERBIA PREPARES FOR THE WORST CROWN SCENARIO In a week, the number of infected in hospitals has doubled, and that is not the only worrying number

What the doctors warned us is happening: yesterday we crossed 1000 infected people per day, 1053 to be precise, and what is also worrying are two more figures: in just seven days in Serbia the number of people hospitalized has doubled and increased drastically on a respirator.

That is, last Monday, according to official data, according to official data from the Institute of Public Health “Milan Jovanović Batut”, we had 408 people in the hospital in Serbia, and 24 of them were on a respirator.

These figures gradually increased during the week, reaching 823 patients in hospitals yesterday, and there are 38 of them on artificial ventilation.

This information certainly causes concern, especially now that experts are announcing that we are only at the beginning of the third wave. And if we are just at the beginning and these numbers continue to grow at this speed, the question arises as to whether we are threatened by the collapse of the health system.

Immunologist and crisis staff member Dr. Srdja Janakovic also warned about this. He warned that the public must adhere to the measures so that “all hospital capacities are not filled”, and “a fire like this is difficult to put out when it starts.”

– The third wave has the potential to be stronger than the previous ones, and that will be and how long it will last depends on how long we will adhere to the measures. We will also try to prolong it, so that we do not experience the collapse of the health system. It’s much more difficult to put out a fire when it starts, Dr. Janković said.

We straighten the evil again

He also explained that this wave is certain to have potentially greater potency than this summer’s second coronavirus wave, and “straightening the curve” has become the current term again.

Straightening the curve is essential to avoid overcrowding of hospitals, since no health system can support a large number of patients in a short period of time, as evidenced by the alarming situation since the beginning of the epidemic in Italy and Spain, and then in many other countries.

Dr. Predrag Kon agrees with the words of Janković, who also believes that this crown wave will last longer than the previous one, and the growth trend of the infected will continue in the coming weeks.

– That increase is expected to last this week and next. If we can stop it, then that increase will continue into the third week, but then it would slow down and it would be nice to be so paradoxical. After that, I hope we can even the curve – warned Dr. Kon as a guest on TV Pink.

And what is the current situation in hospitals?

Two days ago, Health Minister Zlatibor Lončar said that the number of hospitalized patients was increasing.

After meeting with the directors of the kovid hospitals, he told reporters that the Arena had received the first kovid patients and that there were about fifteen patients there at the time.

– The capacity of covid hospitals has exceeded 60 percent, so we have opened the Arena – said Lončar adding that patients with a clearer clinical picture of the hospitals KBC “Dragiša Mišović”, VMC Karaburma, KBC Bežanijska kosa and Infectious Disease Clinics will be transferred to the Arena – Loncar said.

As he further explained, the conditions have been created in the Arena to connect the respirators and that even the most difficult patients can be treated in an emergency.

– We are preparing for the worst case scenario, we are following what is happening in the region and in Europe. I think we relaxed more than we should. Serbia still has a good result, but everything can change if the measures are not respected. I appeal to all citizens not to play cat and mouse with measures, because we must also think about patients suffering from other diseases – Lončar pointed out.

“Infectious in Nis in one day, two will be full”

Hospital capacity is also slowly filling in Nis, because there is a slight increase in the number of patients.

– Relatively young and middle-aged people are infected. The capacities are being filled in our clinic, I hope that we are complete on the second day, and after that, others will take care of the kovid patients, said the prof of “Blic”. Dr. Miodrag Vrbić, director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic in Niš.
