Minister Mihajlović announced that Serbia will implement the Belgrade metro construction project together with French and Chinese partners, and that negotiations are underway.

The agreement was also signed in the Serbian Government by the French Ambassador to Serbia, Jean-Louis Falconi, and was attended by the Mayor of Belgrade, Zoran Radojicic.

Mihajlovic thanked France for its help in starting one of the largest infrastructure projects in Belgrade, such as the metro, as soon as possible.

He noted that this is an important day for the realization of the Belgrade metro project and that “now there is no going back.”

“This agreement implies that we will begin to write a feasibility study, conceptual design and environmental impact assessment study for the first phase, that is, the first subway line. But we will also receive a proposal for a conceptual solution for the third line of metro in Belgrade. “

Mihajlovic says that today’s agreement will result in a contract from which 8.3 million euros will be obtained, and that next year we can expect clear guidelines and how the first line will look and how much it will cost exactly, since and to prepare for the start of construction of the first line.

“In the meantime, we are talking with the French government, but also with Chinese partners, about how we will build and finance this project,” he said.

As he said, it will be the largest and most financially difficult in the entire region, since it is estimated that the three metro lines will cost between 4.5 and 5.5 billion euros.

He recalled that Serbia is currently implementing the largest project in the region, the construction of a high-speed railway from Belgrade to Budapest, which is worth more than two billion euros.

She hopes that the agreement can be reached with the company Belgrade Metro and Train, which will sign the commercial contract, and the French company Egis, who will work on a feasibility study and conceptual design and environmental impact assessment.

“We hope to have it as technical documentation in a year. Meanwhile, we are all working and I cannot say now if the Chinese partner will do the French construction and telecommunications part. Both the Chinese and French partners are talking and the Serbian governments, France and China. “

According to her, in the coming months we will have much more concrete agreements, since the negotiations are still ongoing, “but it is clear that we will also have partners from China and France, an agreement between Serbia and France is being prepared, which could be ratified when we will have a new government, “he added.

Donation of 8.3 million euros.

The French ambassador said that the donation of 8.3 million euros would allow the feasibility study of the first phase of the Belgrade metro to be carried out “in all details and under the control of the Government of Serbia and the city of Belgrade.”

“In parallel, for the construction phase, we are continuing talks on structuring French competitive financing, which should soon be the subject of a new agreement,” he said.

The ambassador said that the French experience gives guarantees for the success and construction of this infrastructure, which is of great importance for the development of the city of Belgrade. “

Falconi noted that the Belgrade Metro project has been at the center of Serbia-France relations for several years, and was restarted during French President Emanuel Macron’s visit to Serbia last year.

“This agreement is an important stage of this long-term project, it shows the commitment of the Serbian and French authorities to implement the project to the end,” said Falconi.

He said that Almstom and other French companies are interested in participating in that project, as well as that it is being discussed with the Serbian government.

Belgrade Mayor Zoran Radojić said this is a long-term project that is very important to the development of Belgrade and the quality of life for Belgraders, and that the project has been updated again in recent years.

He noted the importance of the need to further improve the transportation system in Belgrade and noted that it would further improve the quality of life for people.

This project is of paramount importance to Belgrade, he emphasized.

As a reminder, the French company Egis completed the General Project and Preliminary Feasibility Study for metro lines 1 and 2 last year, in accordance with the Agreement with the City of Belgrade, and the City Commission accepted the Final Report for the implementation of that phase of the project.

The following routes have been adopted: Line 1, Zeleznik – Mirijevo, 21.3 km long, with 23 stations and Line 2, Zemun – Mirijevo train station, 19.2 km long, with 20 stations.
