The newly appointed ambassador of Serbia to the United States, Marko Đurić, said he was elected to that position at a time when the two countries are on the brink of a possible redefinition of relations, which, despite the hostilities of the recent past and disagreements that still exist between the two countries should return to normal. of old friendship and alliance.

Đurić noted that Serbia is interested in improving its image in society and establishing new channels of cooperation with the world’s largest military, political and economic power.

“This is not a deviation from our official neutrality policy, but it is a question of complementing that policy,” Đurić said in an interview with the daily “Politika”.

Đurić spent more than seven years at the helm of the Government Office for Kosovo and Metohija, highlighting the fact that some kind of peace has been preserved, as well as the political unification and consolidation of the Serbs in the southern province.

It also states that buildings, houses, public buildings that were built or rebuilt in the previous seven years cannot be counted.

“The most important result, however, is not of a material nature. In the period when I was the head of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, our people in the province went from an atmosphere of defeatism and almost hopelessness to a team proud and strong, “emphasized Đurić.

What he found when he became the director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, as he puts it, are the inherited agreements that tied the hands of Serbia in Kosovo and Metohija.

“The Serbs in Kosovo were almost left to their own devices, disputed and divided, left at the mercy of the Albanian political establishment, which bought Serbian political representatives with little privileges and treated them as mere decoration,” he added.

It also points out that the threat of new massive acts of violence and expulsion “hung” over the heads of the Serbs.

“Today, Serbs are able to fight for their position and interests in Kosovo and Metohija with political means and one vote,” said the former head of the government office.

When asked to comment on the fact that Albanians have not formed a community of Serbian municipalities for more than seven years, Đurić stated that Albanians have an obsessive need to eradicate Serbs as a political, demographic and economic factor, and that ZSO is designed as a guarantee of survival and development. Serbs on the ground.

“Albanians believe that it does not suit them. It is a backward ethnocentric understanding of a society where there is no place for others and otherwise, and if it weren’t for that, Albanians could see that the prosperity of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija it is in their interest, “Đurić said.

He also emphasizes that the Albanians would like to receive the recognition of Belgrade, not as a civil and open society, but as a society based on the idea of complete Albanian domination, and points out that those expectations are, to put it mildly, little. realistic.

When asked what the security situation was in Kosovo and Metohija, Đurić claims that the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh reassured those who were ridiculed by the constant warnings from Serbia that Kosovo and Metohija are still a powder keg that can explode if it is handled irresponsibly. there are a number of destabilizing factors.

He also referred to the new Director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, Petro Petrović, and stated that he was an honorable, intelligent and enterprising man who fought for Kosovo and Metohija for deeper patriotic reasons.

“The office for Kosovo and Metohija remains in safe and reliable hands, and our people in the southern province will be able to rely on it,” Đurić said.

Concerning the Serbian Progressive Party and the upcoming Presidential session, Đurić hopes that, as he himself says, decisions will be taken that are in the best interest of the citizens of Serbia.

When asked about his relationship with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Đurić says that they are colleagues and comrades in arms, but also that he considers Vučić as his teacher or political mentor.

“I am proud to be part of a team led by such a man and statesman,” Đurić said.
